Hello phantomx5,
Chances are you would get the pimples, eve if you weren't taking the
Minocin! You didn't say whether you were taking the Minocin for acne
vulgaris or rosacea, but alcohol is known to aggravate rosacea, the
"adult" form of acne and acne vulgaris. Alcohol causes the blood
vessels in the face to dilate and this aggravates both forms of acne.
"Rosacea is made worse by drinking hot foods or drinks, drinking
alcohol, sun exposure, or stress"
"Acne is basically zits, pimples, and cysts, and most often occurs in
teens and young adults. Rosacea most often affects adults rather than
teens, and consists of redness and flushing made worse by hot foods
and drinks, spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, and stress. But it is
not uncommon for people to have both acne and rosacea simultaneously.
When that happens, we treat both of them as a unit, and improve your
skin." -- Stuart H. Kaplan, MD, professor of dermatology at UCLA
School of Medicine.

"Minocycline should be used with caution in patients with hepatic
dysfunction and in conjunction with alcohol or other hepatotoxic
drugs." This means if you have liver problems, you should be followed
by your doctor and possibly have liver function tests drawn regularly
while taking Minocin. If you don't have liver problems, you certainly
don't want to cause them by drinking alcohol while taking Minocin!

According to this Vanderbilt University Wellness site: "Alcohol goes
into your blood stream and affects many organs. You could end up with
liver damage, heart disease, pancreatic problems, or cancer because of
long-term alcohol use. Some other problems that can occur with even
short-term moderate alcohol use include:
Weight gain
Acne
Sleep apnea
Bad breath
Tooth problems
Stomach ulcers
High blood pressure
Fetal alcohol syndrome (If you drink while pregnant, your baby could
be born mentally retarded or with other birth defects.)
Alcohol interacts negatively with more than 150 medications, including
antihistamines and acetaminophen. Mixing alcohol with over-the-counter
or prescription medications can also be dangerous - even fatal."

HealthDiscovery's site makes does *not* caution against consuming
alcohol while taking minocin. It does warn about avoiding sun
exposure,a s your skin is more photosensitive while taking this
antibiotic.

This NetDoctor site also does *not* advise abstaining from alcohol.

If you are taking Accutane, or any form of retinoic acid, you should
NOT consume alcohol at all while taking the acne medication.
Anecdotal- you are not alone!:

Dosing:
The amount of Minocin you are prescribed is based on your doctor's
assesment of your condition, and your weight. "The usual dosage of
Minocin is 4 milligrams per 2.2 pounds of body weight to start,
followed by 2 milligrams per 2.2 pounds every 12 hours, up to the
usual adult dose." However, 50-200mg once per day is often prescribed
for acne.

To summarize, phantomx5, chances are good that your new outbreak of
acne is due to alcohol, and not the effect of alcohol on the Minocin.
Even though it appears that light alcohol consumption and Minocin
combined are not harmful, I would exercise caution and avoid alcohol
while taking this medication.
