I meant self-lighting buttons. An LCD screen is not a requirement.

I cannot vouch for it personally, but a friend of mine raves about
this remote control, which seems to have the features you desire:

I have and use two different ones. The first I paid about $75 bucks,
the a/v Producer 8, http://ecoustics.audioreview.com/pscAudioReview/Accessories/Remote+Controls/AV,Producer,8/PRD_117930_2770crx.aspx,
but I like the one from Radio Shack better, I think.

The Producer 8 is a do-everything type remote and very fancy. It only
"learns" 6 keys, though, but it has a great repository of codes.

The Radio Shack 15-2116 model
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=15%2D2116&hp=search

is backlit, and actually learns directly to the appropriate key. For
$32, it's a pretty decent deal for a learning remote.

These are units I own, and use daily. I am happy with both of them.
The a/v Producer 8 is a more intense and formidable remote, while the
RS 8-in-one is narrower and fits rather comfortably in your hand. The
RS remote feels almost as if it has a rubberized grip, something that
you might find comforting compared to other remotes.
