Dear sam_sahand-ga,

I think I know who it is. He fits the criteria of your question
perfectly, but because of the nature of the question, I thought I
would give you the chance of looking at some more images to see if you
agree. The middle one is your image, I have rotated and enlarged the
others to try and match your image.

Let me know what you think.

I thought it was Richard Wilson myself too (the guy from One foot in
the Grave) but unfortunately its not.

Mmmm. Back to the drawing board then. As a matter of interest. How do
you know it's not. Does that give us any help?

Clarification of Question by sam_sahand-ga on 06 Jul 2004 09:42 PDT
To find out if the answer is right, you send them a text and they send
you a text back to say if you're right. More than anything I just
want to know who it is :)

I've tried Nigel Hathorne aswell but incorrect.

I suspect it might be Ian Richardson... he was in that TV drama House of Cards.

Markj

You may have struck oil!

Because the question was 'Who has ...?' which suggests that, like
Peter, he may no longer be with us.

It's Bob Hope guys!

Only thing is... someone made a mistake believing he was still British!

Well... that's my guess!

Sorry my mistake... it's not Bob Hope... BUT I do have it now!

It's Patrick Cargill!

So Sam... Do I get the 50%?? :)

I've tried all the names so far and no luck I'm afraid. For weeks no
one has managed to get this - i think its a tough one.

Why not think a litte bit further back in history? since to me it
looks like a painting and not a photograph.

It might well be Galileo or Charles Darwin

To me, he looks pretty old and I suspect that he's dead.

And are those 'mutton chop' whiskers on his cheeks?

I'm sure that it's not Salman Rushdie because he's never entertained anybody.

So I'm now going to go for Danny La Rue (although he may not be dead, is he?)

I don't know why but Alistair Cooke came to mind immediately when I
saw the picture:

Bowler, I mentioned Alistair Cooke already. I think he has already
been tried and found wanting. ;-)

Hi sam_sahand,

Could it possibly be Sir Alec Guinness? Though I can't remember him
appearing with muttonchops in his later years....

Good luck,
smudgy.

It's going to be someone pretty obscure ... it always is with this type of quiz.

I'd like to suggest Buster Merryfield.

After all, he did have some marvellous mutton chops.

I don't know if he won any awards though.

YES ... It is Buster Merryfield:

Unfortunatelly its not Patrick - I just tried it again.

Just tried Buster too and its not him.

If it helps at all, there was a message which I listened to. It was
of a guy who sounded like he was in his fifties. The accent was of a
fairly well spoken english person. It was too short to get anything
else from it...

The guy in the photo looks older than 'in his fifties' maybe it was a
recording made some time ago.

The folks you are dealing with can be very tricky.

Why not try Donald Sinden and John Mills?

Alistair Sim...aka Scrooge...?

Hi Sam,

Please try Alfred Hitchcock.

Well ..., may I suggest ... "Father Christmas" (i.e. not "Santa Claus").

I suppose, it's worth trying.

I'm not much of an expert on British entertainers, past or present.
But... I find it odd that all the proposed solutions so far have been
men. It may well be a woman, IMHO. (I'll settle for 10% of the prize
if I'm proved right!)

I've tried them all so far and not right.

This is tough one.

Wilfred Hyde-White (he played Rex Harrison's sidekick in the film My Fair Lady)?
Subject: Re: Does anyone know who this is?
From: probonopublico-ga on 09 Jul 2004 11:59 PDT

Here are a few more:

Ian Bannen, Christopher Plummer, Spike Milligan, Marius Goring,
Michael Gough, Stewart Granger, James Mason.

Would you mind sending me £250 on account?
Subject: Re: Does anyone know who this is?
From: gfskinkle-ga on 09 Jul 2004 16:00 PDT

Pretty sure it's Wilfred Hyde-White especially since it is so
difficult to find a good photo of him online (which is probably why
they used him for the mystery person). Hope I'm right and that you win
the competition.

Well, the questioner hasn't posted here since July 9 just a couple of
hours before I made my "guess" of Wilfred Hyde-White. I wonder if
that turned out to be the correct answer and he collected his prize
and moved on...
Subject: Re: Does anyone know who this is?

I have tried nearly all the suggestions made so far. I dont think I'm
gonna try any more as its costing me about 40p per guess. At this rate
I'm gonna end up spending nearly £1000.

Thank you for your guesses. If anyone else would like to try it, the
number is: 87070. write a text such as follows:

GUESS PETER USTINOV

you will get a text back in minutes to say if its right or not.

How about Ronald Magill - Amos off Emmerdale Farm?
Subject: Re: Does anyone know who this is?
From: probonopublico-ga on 13 Jul 2004 12:33 PDT

Artiefufkin

I've never seen Emmerdale or even heard of Ronald Magill but it's got
to be worth 40p to find out.

Do let us know whether or not you have called it correctly.

I guess it's way too late for this but you never know.

I think it is Mark McManus from the old Taggart tv cop series.

Lee.
