I am having problems on my laptop connecting to LiveUpdate, the
message reads: "LiveUpdate could not get the list of updates.
LiveUpdate could not retrieve the catalog file of available Symantec
products. Please check that your connection to the Internet is
functioning correctly and retry LiveUpdate."

I tried to manually connect to symantec.com, but I receive a message
"The page cannot be displayed." I am able to connect to Norton.com,
but then it gives me the same message when I click on virus
definitions. Same if I try a search and try to connect through that
link.

I was using Norton's corporate edition, then uninstalled it when I had
this problem. I could only find an old disk of Norton Antivirus 2002,
so installed that. Both versions have given me the same problem. In
uninstalling the corporate version, I also uninstalled all folders
with liveupdate or symantec. This problem began at the beginning of
May at the same time the sasser worm virus came out - so the 2 could
be related? I downloaded the sasser removal tool, although it told me
I didn't have the virus. Who knows.

Any ideas?

If you trust me,
http://gwybsd.homeip.net/lusetup.exe --LiveUpdate Setup
http://gwybsd.homeip.net/20040706-018-i32.exe --7/6/04 Intelligent Updater

These I copied from www.sarc.com about 15 minutes ago.

you have had a visit from your local virus spreader , the solution is
to check the hosts file on your computer and see if it contains any of
the following entries

127.0.0.1 www.norton.com
127.0.0.1 www.symantec.com
127.0.0.1 www.mcafee.com
127.0.0.1 www.avg.com

and about 20 others , delete those entries and liveupdate will work again

I agree with corwin02-ga.

The HOSTS file is either c:\windows\hosts or C:\windows\system\hosts
or C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

If otherwise you're OK with browsing, your DNS lookup is circumvented
for standard sites.

People seem to download anything posted. :) OK. but understand at this
time the definitions are over one month old. Go to www.sarc.com to
download the latest liveupdates, please?

The link above for virus definitions will certainly change from what
is listed, maybe not even function, may be up to date, may not ...

As with anything on the net, let the downloader beware; what you
download is at your own risk. All I will promise is that *I* won't
change the link to download Gator or Xupiter.

Thank you! corwin02-ga I have been searching for a solution to this
problem and I could not believe how simple it was. It never occured
to me to check the hosts file. Thanks again.
