Question ID: 37086
Currently, I'm running an Athlon 700Mhz in my Asus K7M. I'd like to
do a relatively painless CPU transplant.

General question: How can I find out which processors my MB can run.

Specific questions: Can my motherboard handle a 1.4GHz Athlon? If so,
can I purchase the cheaper 266MHz FSB unit, or must I purchase the
200MHz FSB unit?

Hi there!

Getting the specs for the ASUS K7M is your first step in determining
which CPUs you can use with it:

ASUS K7M Specs

...and a review with specs included:

Alas, the answer to your question of whether your K7M can handle a
1.4GB Athlon is "No, it cannot." You can, however, pop a 1GB in with
no trouble (and really, you wouldn't notice much difference between a
1.4GB and a 1GB, except in the lightness of your wallet). If you're
concerned about speed, but don't want to fuss with getting a new
motherboard, I'd recommend maxing your RAM out to 256MBx3 - it's less
expensive and works just as well.

3DNow! UK offers a nifty troubleshooting and tips guide for the K7M to
help you along in your transplant:

Good luck with your upgrade project!

I've chosen to request clarification via another paid question. I did
this because I should've been more clear what I was looking for.
