I am seeking the name of a children's book I recall reading between
the ages of 8 and 12 (the early to mid 1980s).  I apologize in advance
for the very sketchy details I am able to recall.  The pictures I
recall were done in black pen or pencil.  The plot involved a child
coming across an apparently deserted house in a forest and wandering
through its interior.  I seem to recall the kitchen was deserted with
plates and pots piled high.  There may have been a witch in the story
but I am not sure.  (Yes, it's true, that is all I remember of the
plot.  I told you this was a sketchy request.)  What really has stuck
with me was the haunting, spooky theme of the book.  At the same
period I was quite taken with John Bellairs' books and this book
certainly had the same Gothic mysterious overtones to it.
Any clues you may be able to provide as to the title of the book would
be much appreciated.
