According Pricewatch.com, I can buy a 1GHz/200 FSB Athlon for nearly
the same price as a 1.4/266. (Supply and demand, I guess.)
Apparently (see link above) my Asus K7M motherboard only handles
.5-1GHz CPUs. I understand that. But what I want to know is this...

Can I purchase the 1.4GHz/266 FSB and have my Asus K7M run the
processor at the fastest speed the motherboard can handle? (1GHz/200
FSB) (Since the CPUs are the same price, I'd prefer to buy the faster
longer-lasting one IF my MB can run it.)

Hi donphiltrodt,

I'm sorry, but the answer to the question of whether you can get a 1.4
GHz Athlon to run on your ASUS K7M is still "No, you cannot."

The 1.4GHz/266 FSB Athlon CPU is a Socket A CPU.

The ASUS K7M does not support Socket A. Rather, it is a Slot A
motherboard, as indicated in the specs on the previous answer.

These are two entirely different types of processors - a Socket A
processor is physically incompatible with a Slot A motherboard, and
vice versa.

There is an explanation of the differences here:

Not only did you answer the question, but detected (and clarified) the
source of my confusion. Thanks.
