Hi there, I want to know what percentage of the population had *access
to electricity* in countries in the Caribbean around 1990. Any year
from 1988-1992 would be close enough, even if the years were different
for different countries.

There are 15 countries in the Caribbean, but as long as I can get at
least half (8 countries) that will serve my purposes.

There 15 countries in the Caribbean are: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas,
Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana,
Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines,
Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago.

Thank you.

I already ran a search for "Caribbean electrification" and found this
newspaper story http://www.ticotimes.net/dailyarchive/2004_03/Week1/03_02_04.htm#story3
which mentioned a report from the UN that sounded like it might have
this information, but I couldn't find the report.

It's hard to define "access." I'm somewhat familiar with St Lucia.
Most of the population are villagers living on the hillsides. Every
village that I saw at least had a wire leading to it. But not every
hut would have power. Many people would have little use for
electricity, because they are too poor to own any appliances. It
never gets cold, and there is enough food growing wild to prevent
hunger. Much of the cooking is done with charcoal and a coal pot.

Also, the electric utility company is less than dependable. Even the
"modernized" St Lucians are accustomed to frequent power outages.

Thanks for your comment daytrader. Doesn't look like anyone is going
to find this information so i'm going to close the question.
