How many professional audio/music recording studios are there in the USA?

Below you will find the results of my research regarding the number of
recording studios in the United States. The figures are taken from 
the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to the U.S. economic census there were 1,269 sound recording
studios in 1997.

The Citrus College website states that there are over 2000 recording
studios in the United States.

?There are more than 2,000 recording studios in the United States. The
major recording centers are in Los Angeles, New York City, Nashville and
Chicago. The growth of music videos is opening up opportunities for recording
engineers. Employment is expanding min smaller music studios as the
industry becomes more decentralized. Audio maintenance technicians may
find freelance opportunities at many recording studios.?
