I'm trying to find an artist named T. G.G. Fennigu who painted a
picture of a clipper ship named "Nordstjernen" in 1885. I don't know
if he is an American artist of a Scandanavian artist. The ship
apparently existed both in Norway as its registry was Bergen, Norway
but I believe it also made it to the west coast of San Francisco or
had as its captain a Christian I. Pedersen "Petersen". Christian
Pedersen came to San Francisco somewhere between 1882-1885 and settled
here with his family. He is my great-grandfather and I am trying to
find a link between him and the painting the Nordstjernen. Are there
any other paintings by this artist? |

This is most puzzling. "Fennigu" seems not to be a family name in
Norwegian or any other European language. While the first part
"Fennig" is a (rare) German family name, the "u" at the end makes no
sense at all.
Are you sure about the spelling? Or is it possible that the artist's
name is actually spelled differently?

It could be that the "u" at the end of this signing is some extra
flare of the brush although it does look like an additional letter
which is either a "u" or an "a". I'm sorry I can't be any more
specific than that.

Hennig, Hennigs, Henning and Hennings are all northern Europe artist
names. Any chance this is the name in question?

Also, you might want to have a look at this document:
http://www.mil.no/multimedia/archive/00032/Ongre_A_et_al__2003__32288a.pdf
as theres' a picture -- Fig 1, page 5 -- of the same vessel (different
artist!) circa 1869.

Hello Dave52,
Could you tell us a bit more about you came across this painting? Is
it a family heirloom, did you purchase it? This might help us trace it
back a bit better.

I inheirited the painting from my grandfather in 1978 who was given
the painting by his brother-in-law Sophus Hartwick, former owner and
publisher of the San Francisco Danish Newspaper "Bien" back in 1948.
The painting "Nordstjernen" was also known as the "Margaret" and at
one time was reportedly owned by James Madison, former owner of the
Pacific Fish Company prior to 1948. My family has developed numerous
stories of this painting's origin and I would like to establish who
the artist was, when and where the painting was created and if there
is any real association of this ship to my family. I have a picture of
the ship and the artist's signature which I will attempt to include in
the clarification note. It appears I can't but if you will provide an
address, I will forward the pictures is jpeg format as soon as
possible.
Thanks for your persistence!
