Hello Cjs1,
I've organized a digest of links to articles, reports and statistics
related to what you listed in your question.
According to Imation?s Small Business Survey Special Report conducted
in April 2003, 30 percent of small businesses admit they have no
formal data backup and storage procedures, or do not implement their
procedures consistently.
?Fifty-five percent of small businesses rated themselves as "fair" or
"poor" in terms of having a documented disaster recovery plan, or do
not have one at all.?
?Review and evaluation of data backup and storage procedures is not a
common practice among small businesses.?
?The majority of small companies backup critical data on a daily
basis, and daily backups are more common among companies that deal
with higher volumes of data. But one in three small businesses still
wait until there is a problem before reviewing and evaluating their
backup and storage procedures.?
?Moreover, 21 percent said that they are doing a "fair" or "poor" job
of periodically removing important business data offsite ? a vital
procedure to protect businesses from physical disaster. An additional
13 percent of small businesses admitted to not removing backup files
at all ? that?s 34 percent at risk?.

Costs
?When it comes to storage systems, small businesses tend to lean
toward the least expensive solutions. AMI's research reveals that the
number of businesses deploying storage area network (SAN) and
network-attached storage (NAS) systems increased by 36 percent. The
data indicates that price cuts in SAN/NAS systems, coupled with
enhancements to make the technologies more IP-friendly, were welcomed
by the data-intense segment of the small-business market. AMI
estimates that small businesses spent roughly $480 million on network
storage solutions over the past 12 months ? a 27 percent increase from
2002 spending.?

From On-Site Computer Solutions:

Example:
"We were doing the old-fashioned tape back up solution ? we installed
tape backup systems on each of our six servers for about $1,000 each.
Each branch had to have 16 tapes available for two weeks of data
backup. Tapes cost about $30 each. And of course, a tape backup system
requires user intervention," Benson said. "We looked at the costs and
efficiency of our program and we knew we needed a better backup
resource, but cost was a key factor."
The EVault SBE service supports Microsoft Windows 2000 Server,
Advanced Server and XP Professional versions. EVault's server software
is relatively easy to install and costs $85 to run and store 5 GB of
data."

The Cost of a Data Loss Incident
"An episode of severe data loss will result in one of two outcomes:
either the data are recoverable with the assistance of a technical

into account both possibilities."

resides on desktops and laptops. Less that 8% of users, however,

Broadband to dominate UK by 2005
?The number of broadband subscribers in the UK is set to overtake
narrowband punters during 2005 as more and more people hook up to
high-speed Net services.?
?According to AOL UK's own research, a third of people said they
didn't use the Net enough to warrant upgrading to broadband. Three in
ten said the cost of monthly subscribtions was too prohibitive while
14 per cent said installation costs were too high.
Despite this, the figures suggest that the number of broadband punters
will overtake dial-up users during 2005 as broadband numbers increase
and narrowband becomes a declining part of the market.?

Administration Costs.
?Administration costs are generally more substantial and also more
difficult to quantify. These include the time to change tapes daily,
the time spent monitoring and managing backup jobs, the time spent
doing restores, the time and cost of delivering tapes offsite for
disaster recovery and the time spent resolving hardware and software
issues. It is important to also put a value on the ?opportunity cost?
of having someone who serves another business function doing the
menial task of backup.?
http://www.usdatatrust.com/service/cost_comparison.asp
A typical recovery, however, takes 3-5 business days
http://www.averdrivetronics.com/
Time investment required for maintenance of PC
Maintenance task
1. Back up every day. Store your backup media in a safe manner.
Time investment
Five minutes a day, if you back up to diskettes. If you have a
high-capacity backup drive, backups can happen during off-hours.
Maintenance task
2. Run ScanDisk about once a week, to audit your hard disk file
system, and also run it immediately after any abnormal stop.
Time investment
Two or three minutes a week, plus two or three minutes per lockup.
Maintenance task
3. Run your disk defragmenter program about once per two months, to
keep your hard disk saves and retrievals moving at maximum speed.
Time investment
About five minutes per two months.
Maintenance task
4. Scan your system for viruses once a month or so, and scan any
diskette or program file that reaches you from outside, before you run
them, including Internet and bulletin board downloads. Time
investment
Three to five minutes per month, and less than a minute each to scan
foreign files or diskettes.
Maintenance task
5. Protect your PC from power surges, by buying a UPS system (once),
or an ordinary $20 surge protector once a year.
Time investment
Zero.
Maintenance task
6. Make and maintain a panic disk; a boot diskette that lets you start
up your PC independently from the hard disk.
Time investment
Five minutes to make the diskette, and a minute or so whenever new
drivers or software are installed.
http://www.icehouse.net/jim_d/time.html
?The time needed to recover data may vary greatly. If a data backup
exists and is readily accessible, the time needed to recover data may
be very short. At the other end of the spectrum, if the data are
corrupted on the hard drive, several days may be required to retrieve
the data.
If the average time needed to recover lost data is approximately six
hours, the cost of using an employee to recover lost data is
approximately $170. However, if a firm does not employ a specialist
who is able to retrieve lost data, the company must go to an outside
firm to attempt data recovery. Outside data recovery specialists can
be much more expensive than in-house sources, sometimes exceeding two
to three times the cost of an in-house specialist. Thus, taking into
account that an outside specialist must often be used in data recovery
attempts, one can conservatively estimate the minimum cost of outside
technical support to recover lost data to be around $340.?
Pepperdine University

?The majority of small companies backup critical data on a daily
basis, and daily backups are more common among companies that deal

?The diagnostic test usually takes from 2 to 4 days and determines two
points: whether your media has a mechanical failure or if the basic
filing system has logical problems; and, what data is recoverable.
It encompasses:
Duplicating your media to prohibit further damage or data loss
Analyzing your media to determine what data is recoverable
Producing a complete listing of all recoverable data for you to review
The recovery phase usually takes from 1 to 3 days and involves:
Extracting data from your media
Organizing your data into a useable directory structure format?
