I have an iPaq 1945. Approximately ever minute the iPaq attempts a
dial-up connection, even though I don't have a modem. This results in
the iPaq flashing an dialog box and message, that I have to close out.
A minute later the problem repeats itself. I have gone through all
the dial-up settings, but can't seem to find the setting to shut off
this repeated problem. I need specific instructions on how to do
this. Thanks.

Greetings, dobannon!

I strongly suspect that your computer has been infested by a virus or
Trojan which contains an auto-dialer. Auto-dialers are usually
designed to quietly call a number on your modem and run up huge
long-distance bills without your knowledge.

Please download, install, and run the following free utilities:

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
start up Spybot Search & Destroy. Pull down the "Help" menu and select
"About". You should see
Latest detection update: 2004-07-09.
If your settings for either of these do not match, click the "Update"
icon menu on the left-hand side of the screen, and then click on
"Search for Updates" near the top of the page. You'll need to exit
Spybot and restart it to check the version number on the "About"
information page again. Once you have the latest Version and Detection
Update, run Spybot by clicking the "Search & Destroy" on the left-hand
menu, then clicking "Check for problems. Have Spybot remove the
recommended items.

AdAware
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download
Start up AdAware. In the bottom right-hand corner, it should say
"AdAware 6.0 Personal, Build 6.181". Up above, under "Initialization
Status", it should say "Reference file 01R331 08.07.2004 loaded". If
your settings for either of these do not match, click "Check for
updates now". Once you have the latest Version and Detection Update,
run AdAware by clicking the "=> Start" button on the bottom right of
the screen. Have AdAware remove the recommended items.

*** IMPORTANT ***
The first time you run them, or if you already have Spybot and/or
AdAware installed on your PC, be sure to download the latest updates
first **each time you run them**.
*****************

Something to keep in mind is that even if these programs give your
system a "clean bill of health", it does *not* mean that you can be
absolutely sure that your system is clean. It is only a *reasonable
assurance* that it is clean.

Then shut down your computer and restart.

Once you've done those, download and run CoolWebShredder (scroll down):
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
When you start up CoolWebShredder, it should say Version 1.59.1 .

Then shut down your computer and restart.

After following all those steps, if your problem is still occurring, I
will work with you until we get it resolved.

Before Rating my Answer, if you have any Questions about the above
information, or if your problem is not yet resolved, please post a
Request for Clarification, and I will be glad to see what I can do for
you.

Regards,

aceresearcher

It's not my computer that I'm having the problem with.
It's my PDA (Hewlett Packard iPaq 1945), not my desktop.
Are you suggesting that my PDA has a virus? If so,
how do I delete it? Thanks.

I've now installed and run Symantec antivirus for Handhelds,
and still have the same problem. My PDA keeps trying to make
a dial-up connection.

Do those programs run on an iPAQ?

Unless I'm mistaken, the asker's iPaq 1945 is a PDA, not a desktop, so
the answer given doesn't really apply. I'm not aware of any
auto-dialer trojans infecting PocketPC, which doesn't mean they can't
exist, but certainly aren't common. At any rate the programs
mentioned are for the desktop PC, so won't help.

The most likely culprit for this is ActiveSync. Open AS on the iPaq
(not desktop) then tap on Tools>Options menu, then the Mobile Schedule
tab. If you see the box for Syncing wirelessly has anything other
than Manually, change it to manually. If that doesn't work, check the
HP support forum at:

This is a very helpful site and you can post this question there for
free and are likely to find someone else who has had this problem and
can help with it.

The link I put in above may not work, so try this one:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/home.do?forumId=2

Then choose handhelds-iPaq, Aero under the Mobile Devices section in
the orange box. Note that this is not support from actual HP
employees, which is not always very helpful, but a support forum where
other actual users help you solve problems. I have found them to be
very diligent about working to find a solution.
