Dear sokowicz-ga,

Unfortunately 'The Bat!' e-mail client doesn't seem to provide
built-in support for proxy servers, nor does a plugin exist. Luckily
however, there is a way to tunnel programs using the tcp/ip protocol
over a proxy server and/or firewall. The (free) program you need for
this is HTTPort.

Homepage:
http://www.htthost.com

Direct download link for the Windows version:
http://www.htthost.com/httport3snfm.exe

I've tried it on The Bat version 2.11.02 and it works like a charm.
Once you install HTTPort, here's how to configure it:

- Start HTTPort
- Select the "Proxy" tab.
- Fill in the host name/ip and port of the proxy server (10.0.0.29 and 3128)
- Check "proxy server requires authentication" and fill in username/password
- Select the "Port mapping" tab
- Click open the "Yahoo SMTP" example in the tree
- Click open "Remote host" and edit it to match your SMTP (outgoing)
mail server ip/hostname (by right clicking). The "Remote port" is
configured as 25 by default and shouldn't be changed for most mail
servers. The "Local port" can remain configured as 9025.
- Do the same for the "Yahoo pop" example, by setting the hostname/ip
of your POP3 (incoming) mail server. The "Remote port" is configured
as 110 by default and shouldn't be changed for most mail servers. The
"Local port" can remain configured as 9110.
- Go back to the "Proxy" tab and click the "start" button

Allright, http tunneling is enabled, so all we need to do now is
configure 'The Bat'. Start up your e-mail client, go to the "Account"
menu and select "Properties". On the left, select "Transport" and in
the "Send mail" area, set "SMTP server" to "127.0.0.1" (or
"localhost") and "Port" to "9025". In the "Receive mail" area, set
"Mail server" to "127.0.0.1" (or "localhost") and "Port" to "9110".

If all went well, you should now be able to send and receive messages
through your proxy/firewall. In case this wouldn't work, doublecheck
your settings and don't hesitate to ask for a clarification.

BTW, you can set-up HTTPort to automatically start up minimized,
whenever Windows starts up (see 'System' tab), such that the tunneling
is performed transparantly.

Sincerely,

rhansenne-ga.

HTTPort also says: "OBSERVER: 0106 No such variable"

Hi sokowicz-ga,

I'll try it out on an other PC (behind a different proxy) later
tonight and look up that error code as well. I'll keep you informed!

Sincerely,

rhansenne-ga.

Hi sokowicz-ga,

I've tried it on an other configuration behind a restrictive proxy and
got it to work there as well.

This is what I found on the HTTPort website concerning the error message:

Q: It works but every time it pops up with message "0106 no such
variable". How can this be fixed ?

This could only happen if the public HTTHost server has been recently
restarted and it's initialization has not been finished yet. As this
requires manual intervention, this period of "106-ity" may last from
minutes to days. There is nothing you can do from your side but wait
until we complete the initialization. Please be assured that (1) we
don't restart the server unless absolutely necessary and (2) we will
be fixing it as soon as we can.

On the tab "Proxy", the "Bypass mode" is set to "Auto" by default.
Could you try setting this mode to the other ones ("Connect" and
"Remote host") in turn, and restart the proxy each time (by pressing
the stop/start button)?

Also, check the "Port mapping" tab while you try sending or receiving
mail. Do the leds change color?

Make sure your mail account name and password are still set to the
correct values, even though the mail server ip is set to localhost and
the port is set to the local port (9025/9110).

If that doesn't work, you could try Proxifier:

http://www.proxifier.com/

"Proxifier is a program that allows network applications that do not
support working through proxy servers operate through a HTTP or SOCKS
proxy server or a chain of proxy servers."

Alternatively, you can try a commercial tunneling application, such as:

http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/solutions/http_tunnel/client.asp
which costs $1.49 per month (or $0.83 per month for yearly
subscriptions) for the low-bandwith version (which should be enough
for e-mail). It's easy to set-up and support is provided.

Kind regards and good luck!

HTTPort"

What can i do?!

Thank you!

Hi,

I see on the HTTPort forum that the public server is down for the moment:
http://www.htthost.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=164

Hopefully, it will be back up soon.

Do you by any chance have access to a PC outside of the network (for
instance your home PC)? If that is the case, you can set up your own
HTTHost server, by downloading "HTTHost"
(http://www.htthost.com/htthost182personal.zip) and installing and
running it on that PC. You can then tunnel through this PC from behind
the proxy server by setting the IP address of the HTTHost PC on the
"Proxy" tab of the HTTPort client (at the bottom)

The general HTTPort/HTTHost forum can be found here:
http://www.htthost.com/phpBB2/

rhansenne-ga.

Dear sokowicz-ga,

I located another proxy bypass service with POP/SMTP support you could try:

ByPass:
http://www.bypass.cc/

It's free to use, though the free account has limited bandwith (should
be enough for e-mail).

In order to use it, you need to download the client from the website:
http://www.bypass.cc/download/index.html

Choose the "java included" version, unless you're certain that Java is
already installed on your machine.

Next, install the program.

On the "General" tab, check "Connect automatically".

On the "Bypass tab", enter a valid portal IP. you can find these here:
http://www.bypass.cc/services/
(for instance: "portal1.bypass.cc" on port "80")
A little lower, you need to fill in your proxy address/port

On the "Proxy Services" tab, check "SMTP" and "POP3". Uncheck the others.

Click apply

From the "Run" menu, select "Start".

"TRYING GET/POST", "Trying SOCKS4",..

Now, in "The Bat!", reset all your settings like they were originally
(undo the changes you did for HTTPort). So, make sure the real
SMTP/POP3 server addresses and ports are configureed.

I've tried it with my own proxy server and got it working with The bat!.

Sincerely,

rhansenne-ga

Dear sokowicz,

Which version of Windows are you running?
Did you install the version *with* java included?

If it really doesn't work, you can try manually downloading and
installing the Java VM from:
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

and then, download and install the bypass version without java.

I hope we'll get it working this time...

Best regards,

rhansenne-ga.

Hi sokowicz,

It's quite strange that Java applications don't run on your system
after installing the Java virtual machine. I'm not sure what the
problem could be.

Have you tried the Proxifier alternative (http://www.proxifier.com -
see also an earlier reply)? Documentation on setting it up to work
with your e-mail client is available here:
http://www.proxifier.com/documentation.htm

You'll need to set the smpt/pop3 server/port in The Bat! back to your
standard settings (correct mail server addresses on ports 25 and 110).

Sincerely,

rhansenne-ga.

BTW, does Outlook Express work, when you configure an account with
your mail server settings and configure it to use a proxy? This can be
done as follows:

Tools Menu -> Options -> Connection Tab -> Change internet Connection
Settings -> LAN Settings -> Use Proxy Server -> Advanced -> enter the
correct proxy address and port.

Kind regards,

rhansenne-ga.

yes i tried proxifier but like you told me the servers are down...its
not possible to configure outlook like that because the proxy port
(here) is 3128 and pop3 uses 110

Clarification of Answer by rhansenne-ga on 14 Jul 2004 06:30 PDT
Dear sokowicz-ga,

Actually it was the public HTTPort server that was down. The Proxifier
server is active (at least, i can get it to work over here).

In regard to Outlook: the fact that pop3 and smtp use different ports
should not matter. You should simply configure them as such (port 110
for pop3) and indicate in "Lan settings" that a proxy server should be
used (on port 3128). All trafic should then automatically be routed
through that proxy, in the same way all you internet traffic (port 80)
is routed through the proxy. By default, Outlook uses the same proxy
settings as Internet Explorer does.

What's the error message you get when you setup an Outlook account for
your pop3 server (port 110), make sure the proxy server is set and try
to receive your mail from that account?

Kind regards,

rhansenne-ga.

I tried to configure outlook like you wrote:

Tools Menu -> Options -> Connection Tab -> Change internet Connection
Settings -> LAN Settings -> Use Proxy Server -> Advanced -> enter the
correct proxy address and port.

But there was already the correct proxy because i entered it when i
configurated my ie.

Here the Error
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.x.com',
Server: 'smtp.x.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Ok, I'll see what I can find on that error message. In the mean time
here is (yet another) tunneling application you could try:

ProxyCap:
http://www.softlinks.ru/download/file.php?fileID=5213

it seems to be quite easy to configure...

btw, is your proxy a http, socks4 or socks5 proxy?

Sincerely,

rhansenne-ga

httpS or Socks 5 because it requires username and password...

ProxyCap does not support username and password?!

Clarification of Answer by rhansenne-ga on 14 Jul 2004 07:46 PDT
Hi sokowicz,

You could always try SocksCap, though I didn't manage to get it
running on my configuration:
http://archive.socks.permeo.com/cgi-bin/download.pl

Alternatively, you could try out an e-mail client with native socks
support, such as Netscape Mail. You can download Netscape here:
http://wp.netscape.com/computing/download/

After setting up your mail account, go to the 'Edit' menu, select
'Preferences', click open 'Advanced' and click on 'Proxies'. There you
can set up your proxy server exactly as it is set up in IE (try socks
and if that doesn't work, try ssl). Hope that works...

Kind regards,

rhansenne-ga.
