Hello. I would like to hold a jewelry design contest. The participants
would be jewelry design students at all the Art & Design institutes and in
the relevant departments at all of the Universities and Community
Colleges in the United States. How would I go about posting(
preferably through the internet) such a contest and inviting the
students to take part. The answer should include a step by step method
and all links needed to reach the students. I would also appreciate a
list of all search terms used.

Could you please clarify:
Are you looking for a suitable webdesign with a database were the
students could enter their entries for the contest ? Or are you
looking for a strategy of how such a page should be designed ?

Dear Ratan,

First of all, let me say that your initiative sounds very exiting to
me.

However, the first stage doesn't sound so exiting: The first thing you
should do is to form the terms of the competition with your
lawyer/accountant. The reason you should make it with an expert is to
make sure there are no loop holes in the temrs of the competition,
that it seems dair to the contestants (and is fair), and that you're
legally covered from law-suits regaring the competition.

You probably also thought about it, but you should express in clear
terms how are works selected (do you plan to invite experts on the
field to judge? is it your own personal taste? etc.). Of course, if
this also involves planning an event/exhibition of the works, or
inviting experts to be judges, that should be considered within the
time-plan.

After you have all the terms figured out, you publish the competition,
on your company's web-site or on a web-site providor. If you want to,
there are also some free homepage providors such as
http://www.geocities.com and http://www.tripod.com
May I point that they cover their expenses by loading the page with
ads, which may not be so elegant in your case.

Now for getting people to know about the contest. When publishing such
an announcement, you should let people long time enough to design a
model.

In order to access design students, there are several effective ways
you should use. The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to publish
your contest in a discussion group.

Here are several:

Before advertisingin this one, you must be registered with
google-groups (at http://groups.google.com/) and it's also moderated,
so it might take a day or two to be advertised.
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&group=rec.crafts.jewelry

The Orchid is also a good place, full of professionals and students,
mostly from North America and Western Europe. You also have to
register before publishing:
http://www.ganoksin.com/orchid/orchid.htm

Another possibility is a message board regarding deadlines for
contests and grants for artists and designers, such as
http://artdeadline.com/DeadlineSubmission.html ;

You can also contact the institutions yourself (email or fax). I
gathered here American institutions (and not all, only prominent
ones). Please contact me if you need institutions from other
countries:

I am sorry, but you probably misunderstood my question. I do not need
help in designing the terms of the contest, nor the contest itself nor
the manner in which the students will submit their entries and be
judged . The winners would be chosen fairly and valuable prizes will
be provided. My question dealt specifically with the following:

How do I contact MOST (not just a few prominent ones) design
(teaching) institutes as well as the departments of colleges &
universities that do offer jewelry design as a course and advise them
of the contest and invite their students to submit their designs? When
I said "posting the contest- preferably through the Internet", I meant
posting(promoting-advertising) the contest to the students of the
various institutes and colleges ( maybe on the colleges' or
institutes' websites) that offer jewelry designs as one of their
courses. An alternative would be to contact the various professors who
teach these courses and have them speak to their students about it(
How would I find them and send them the info). I just need a viable
and efficient strategy so that the contest would draw good
participation. I need a much more thorough and inventive search,
please!

First, let me apologise forthe misunderstanding. However, I still
think that you would reach students affectively using the discusion
networks and forums suggested above.

There are several good listings that comprehend (probably) most
colleges in the US: -
The Jewelry Design Professionals' Network
(http://www.geocities.com/~jdpn/ - choose "schools") have a listing in
their site.
The Government also provides such a list by post:
"To receive a list of technical schools which have programs in jewelry
design, accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and
Colleges of Technology, contact:
