One of the online directory lists the following companies/brands: Abed Adjusta-Magic Aero American Massage Products Bergad Coleman Colgate Comfort Direct Comfortaire Craftmatic Duxiana Eddie Bauer Englander ExpressBeds Gentle Air Greatland Indoors & Outdoors InnerSpace Intelli-Gel Intex Recreation Invacare Isoform Isotonic King Koil Kingsdown Land and Sky Natura World Nautilus Sleep Systems Posture Beauty Restonic Roho Royal Pedic Sealy Select Comfort Serta Simmons Sissel Sleepmatterz Slumberland Spring Air Stearns & Foster Strobel Symbol Texsport Therm-a-Rest Verlo Watermatresses Wenzel Zip & Block You're right -- a lot of "S" companies. And after learning of a mattress called "Zip and Block", I can understand why a company might prefer a soft, soporific "S" sound. |

Of course it could be other reasons, but my guess it's just a correlation with the way words in the English language in general is distributed... If you take a medium(?) sized English dictionary (in this case using the one supplied with ispell, http://fmg-www.cs.ucla.edu/fmg-members/geoff/ispell.html) ignoring any "words" starting with a capital letter (countries, abbreviations, acronyms and names) and then sorting for a total of 93130 words, including any inflicted forms, you get the following distribution for a starting letter a 6.04 % 5630 of 93130 b 5.39 % 5029 of 93130 c 9.03 % 8414 of 93130 d 5.99 % 5587 of 93130 e 4.42 % 4117 of 93130 f 3.97 % 3704 of 93130 g 2.87 % 2682 of 93130 h 3.51 % 3271 of 93130 i 4.72 % 4404 of 93130 j 0.71 % 668 of 93130 k 0.60 % 559 of 93130 l 2.99 % 2785 of 93130 m 5.58 % 5204 of 93130 n 1.85 % 1725 of 93130 o 2.43 % 2272 of 93130 p 8.69 % 8100 of 93130 q 0.51 % 483 of 93130 r 5.78 % 5390 of 93130 s 11.93 % 11121 of 93130 t 5.68 % 5291 of 93130 u 2.87 % 2680 of 93130 v 1.67 % 1559 of 93130 w 2.23 % 2080 of 93130 x 0.04 % 43 of 93130 y 0.19 % 183 of 93130 z 0.15 % 149 of 93130 (Got something similar for another Germanic language too, with S being the most frequent one, but many of the other letters where distributed differently.) |
