Hi,

I have just recently pushed out an upgrade to Outlook
2003 from my Windows 2003 SBS to my Windows XP Pro and
2000 Pro clients. The install worked fine, imported all
e-mail and contacts. I then converted all PST mail
stores to Exchange mailboxes that I have enabled on the
SBS. Here's the problem: Now, whenever Outlook 2003
attempts to check the POP3 e-mail account (which is
hosted at a separate ISP), a dialog appears prompting for
the POP3 username and password. Interesting thing is,
the dialog is already filled in, and all the user does it
hits 'OK' and Outlook proceeds to check mail.

Is there any way to eliminate this step from the
process? What happens is that a user is working in a
program, this dialog gets behind the active window and
the user never hits OK, therefore they never see their
new e-mail. Also, when the user's are set to check for
new messages every 5 minutes, it begins to get annoying.

I have verified with the ISP that the mailbox is NOT
getting locked from checking every 5 minutes. It is
simply Outlook 2003 prompting for the user to click OK
each time it attempts to Send/Receive.

Any help is appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Josh

May sound like a silly question, but do you have the "Remember
Password" checkbox checked in the account set-up?

Yes, the remember password option is checked. In fact, when the
dialog appears asking for the password, it is already there. I just
click OK and away it checks. I have also deleted the POP3 account
from Tools->E-mail Accounts, restarted Outlook, and set the mail
account up again. Same problem.

Thanks!
Josh

Just FYI: I run McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 7.1 with current DATs on
the workstation, and managed by McAfee EPO 3 on the Windows 2003 SBS.
I have disabled the McAfee e-mail scanning for the time being to see
if it was causing any disruption. No change to the Outlook problem
after that. Don't know if this helps any, but thought I'd post it.

Thanks,
Josh

Hello:

I had written up a whole answer for you, based on solutions set forth
in the Microsoft Office Base at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290684
and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q264672#appliesto

But right before pressing the 'submit' button, I came across
POP password not saved - Protected Storage System Provider registry
key fix doesn't work
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Outlook/microsoft.public.outlook.general/2004-05/4514.html

Which caused me to lose my nerve in offering the Protected Storage
System Provider registry key fix as the answer to your question.

While I normally would not post a trial answer, I hope the Editors
will indulge me in making an exception for you in this case.

Please try the Protected Storage System Provider registry key fix, and
let me know if it works for you, in which case I will post my Answer
and collect your fee.

Sincerely,
Richard-ga

I tried the Protected Storage System Provider fix, and it did not
resolve the problem. After making the change, I rebooted and checked,
and the same problem occurs.

Thanks,
Josh

In Outlook 2003, the Exchange server account properties and the POP3
account properties are all located in the Tools -> E-mail Accounts
Dialog. I will mention that before I pushed out the Outlook 2003
upgrade, all the workstations ran Outlook 2002 with the same exact
configuration and they worked flawlessly. I have other computers at
other locations that I have set up from scratch with Outlook 2003 and
both POP3 and Exchange accounts, and they work together properly.
This problem with the workstations not checking mail without prompting
first just began with the upgrade to Outlook 2003. I have uninstalled
Outlook 2003 and reverted to Outlook 2002 an a workstation as a test,
but the problem was unfortunately still there. I have since upgraded
that workstation back to Outlook 2003 and the problem still exists.

Just a clarification, Outlook is not forgetting the passwords, as the
dialog that appears when a Send/Receive happens already has the POP3
username, server, AND password filled in (the password appears as
****), and all I have to do is click OK and the Send/Receive proceeds
along.

The exchange server (server2003) is on the local private domain
(domain.local), so the client workstations refer to it as
server2003.domain.local. The client workstations use this server as
their DNS server. This server is set to forward all unknown dns
querys to the ISP's DNS server (Qwest). I have also configured an
Exchange mail forwarder for all unknown domain to forward to Qwest's
outgoing mail server. All outgoing mail works fine, and all incoming
mail works fine. The issue is just that Outlook will not check for
new messages without user intervention.

Hopes that clarifies some points.

Thanks! Josh.

If I understand correctly, tools->email accounts is only for Internet
Only connections. If you're on Exchange, you should be using
Corporate/workgroup. Likewise, you may wish to invest in an Exchange
POP3 downloader http://www.msexchange.org/software/POP3-Downloaders/
to avoid having the client connect to the Internet. It should be noted
that security-wise, this is considered a *bad thing* because POP3
passwords are sent plain text.

The ideal connection, of course, is to have your MX address for your
domain pointed to a static IP address, filtered through a
proxyserver/mail AV checker, then to your Exchange Server.

However, SBS *USED* to have a pop3 connector ...

Hope this helps.
