My name is John Juber I live in Brunswick, Georgia. Wanted to sell my college math book on eBay. I paid over one hundred dollars for set of books. The books show heavy signs wear. I have also customized the book. I used it for my college math class, when I attended Costal Georgia Community College. The question I have is do you think I can get more that $100.00 for the book? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6912729038&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT |

No way man. Even if someone were to pay more than $100, he or she would never do so as a starting bid. I have found on ebay that you have to make the starting price low, and people will bid higher than if you just start off high. Also, look at the same book being offered for $59: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0130328421//002-1121255-1844056?condition=all |

Personally, I would pay more for a book that hadn't been 'customized' and, as it was published as recently as 2001, it is hardly 'antiquarian'. But even collectible books attract better prices if they don't show any signs of wear. That said, everything is worth whatever you say it is but the problem is finding someone who agrees with you. I remember the true story of a man who bought a load of carpet at a very low price. He thought that he could re-sell at a higher price but the quality was so bad that everyone who saw it turned it down. Then he had the idea of offering small samples by mail order at a very small price. Nobody who bought a sample ever went on to buy more but he was able to sell all his carpet in sample quantities for a decent sum. So there you go ... Advertise your book for $100 and offer a sample page for $1 plus P&P. Who knows? But if this works, please cut me in for 10% commission. Best of Luck! |

JohnJuber -- The Wall Street Journal had an article about selling used textbooks the other day. It said there are lots of websites where you can sell used books and the site takes a fee. But the article also mentioned other sites where they pay cash for your books up front and may even cover shipping costs. Sites mentioned in the article: Barnes & Noble (www.bn.com) www.TextbookBuyer.com www.Boookbyte.com wwww.eCampus.com The article said that science textbooks tend to have the most value, but gave examples of other types of books that did well, too. But would you get $100 for your mathbook? You should go check and see what it's going for. |
