I am looking for an outdoor activity for our three children ages 1
 - 9 years  to celebrate the youngest child's 1st birthday.  I
have in mind a simple train park or very small amusement park or
petting zoo. It should be located in the Western suburbs of Boston,
MA, as close to Lexington as possible.

I know that you were not looking specifically for a museum, but this
attraction is aimed only for 1-10 year olds with lots of hands-on, fun
family activities.

Edaville Railroad

Edaville Railroad also sounds like an excellent choice, but it is out
of the way in South Carver. Would you mind going the extra distance?

Davis’ Farmland and Mega Maze

This farm is located in Sterling, also farther than you asked for.
Personally, I find this the most exciting event for my children. It
offers a maze, farm tours, animal petting, hayrides, and picnic
facilities.

I also searched for small amusement parks in Boston, but most of them
seem too big and inappropriate for small children.
