Hello duby~

The easiest way for employers to learn about you is to call your
current or former boss. What they can find out from this source may
vary from state to state, but if you signed an agreement to allow the
employer to give out employment-related information, they probably
will. Sometimes you don?t even need to sign a form or contract?-the
employee manual, for example, may stipulate this and in some states
this is as good as a contract.

However, many bosses like to play it safe; they don?t want to be sued
for passing along information that you could call a lie. In most
cases, then, they?ll give out the following information:

? Start and end dates of your employment.
? Your job title(s).
? In some cases, your final salary.
? What company-paid-for training you may have had.

For more information on what former employers may or may not talk
about, see ?Employment Background Check? at About.com:
http://jobsearchtech.about.com/library/weekly/aa042301.htm.

Again, some of this varies from state to state, but generally,
employers can also check:

? Your credit report (which can include your current or previous
address, marital status, current and former employer names and
addresses, your social security number, any bankruptcies you may have
filed within the past ten years, liens and judgments from the past
seven years, child support obligations, loan obligations under seven
years old, and the names of other companies that may have checked your
credit report.)

? Your criminal record. Arrests over seven years old cannot be
included, but if you served time, that will show up.

? Sex offender lists.

? Court records.

? Education records.

? Worker?s compensation.

? Character and personal references.

? Military records.

? Driving records and vehicle registrations.

And, in some cases, where allowed, your:

* Property ownership

* Medical records

For more information on these checks, and what is (and is not) allowed
by law, see ?Fact Sheet 16: Employment Background Checks? at Privacy
Rights: http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs16-bck.htm#2

Kriswrite
