How can I zero-out all my Outlook settings and start from scratch (to
avoid a Send/Receive error I am having)

I used the windows xp migration tool (File and settings transfer
wizard) to xfer my Outlook settings from my office PC to my home PC
(both run Windows XP pro and Office XP).

After I did the restore on the home end everything worked great.

THEN...
One day Outlook seemed to get corrupted, so I deleted all my PST files
and ran the wizard to restore again.

Now all my IMAP accouts are duplictaed in the folder list, and the
check mail command (send/recieve) returns a error of:

The operation failed due to a registry error.

My question is:

How can I zero-out all my Outlook settings and start from scratch?

There are two things I would try.

First, have you attempted to use System Restore? If not, I would try
it first, as it is very simple to use, and anything you do with it is
completely reversible if it turns out not to be right.

System Restore can be found in All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools.

If that doesn't work for you, then you may need to reinstall Outlook.
Instructions for doing so are on the Microsoft Website.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP (Q318378)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q318378

From the website:

"Method 1: Reinstall or Repair Windows XP

To repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP, complete the following procedure while you are logged on
as an administrator:

1) Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files
on your computer:

   a) Click Start, and then click Run.

   b) In the Open box, type sfc /scannow , and then click OK. Note
that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM.

2) Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is
resolved, skip the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved,
continue to the next step.

3) Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP, a repair of Windows XP,
or reinstall Windows XP.

For additional information about how to complete an in-place upgrade
or repair of Windows XP, click the article number below to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q315341 How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315341

Method 2: Edit the Registry and Install Internet Explorer 6

1) While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start , and then
click Run.

2) In the Open box, type regedit , and then click OK.

3) Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled
(REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify . To reinstall only the
Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following
registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}

To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

4) Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.

5) Quit Registry Editor, and then download and install Internet
Explorer 6. For information about how to download and install Internet
Explorer 6, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp"

Personally, I'd try running the System File Checker from Method 1, but
if that didn't work, I'd move straight to Method 2. Edit the Registry
key to cause Windows to think it doesn't have Outlook installed, and
then re-install it. If THAT didn't work, THEN I'd go back to Method 1
and do an upgrade/re-install of Windows XP. I'd save the full
re-install for last, as there is a chance you could lose data and
settings doing this.

Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance.

I am using Outlook XP (not Outlook Express).

No luck with these tactics:
-I tried repairing Outlook
-I tried the System File Checker tool

Problem Re-Clarification:
-I have Outlook XP with several IMAP accounts. The IMAP accts work
fine if you just open IMAP folders in the Folder List.
-I decided not to uninstall everything, not to delete all my accts,
and not to zero all the settings.
- I still get the following error message when clicking on the
Send/Receive button:

“The operation failed due to a registry or Installation problem.
Restart Outlook and try again. If the problem persists, please
reinstall.”

I already did a repair, isn't that like a reinstall.

"I already did a repair, isn't that like a reinstall."

Generally, Microsoft's repair programs just check that all the
installed files are present and uncorrupted, and that the data files
are constructed correctly. It's not going to identify this kind of
problem necessarily. In your case, you want to restore your settings
back to their original values. A reinstall will do that.

Oh, and BTW, sorry about originally Mis-identifying the program you
were talking about.

Regular Outlook, or Express?
Do you need to get rid of mailboxes, and email
also?

Possible simple fix to: Outlook 2002 error message: :?The operation
failed due to a registry or Installation problem.? After attempting
Tool | Send/Receive | Send and Receive All

Briefly (how to fix):
1) Stay online with your ISP
2) Start up Outlook (if not already started)
3) At main toolbar: File | Work Offline (i.e. specify work offline)
When I did that it took about 20-30 seconds to complete
4) Shutdown Outlook
5) Continue to stay online with your ISP
6) Start Outlook
7) Change setting to 'do not' Work Offline

If it worked, Outlook will take a few seconds accessing your accounts

Prior to my stumbling across this, I had tried numerous variations to
get rid of problem...
1) Full and restarted shutdown,
2) Start Outlook before my ISP program (my ISP is Compuserve dial-up)
3) Start ISP program before Outlook
4) Connect to ISP before and after start Outlook.

And of course searching for a ?simple? solution on Google and MS
TechNet (hoping to avoid the many hours of pain while backing up,
exporting, reinstalling, and recovery).

FYI
My ISP is Compuserve via dial-up
Outlook is from Office 2002 XP Professional (shows up as Office 10)
Windows is Windows 2000 Professional

I hope this helps someone. Good luck.
