I'm thinking of going into selling books in a small way, i.e. with a
stall at a market and a small inventory. How do I find a list/trade
publication of book wholesalers and their contact details? Are there
special conditions I need to meet to approach them?

Hi rkmudge,

Okey dokey, here you go -

CONTACTS

One of the best websites online for finding contact information of
book distributors is the Chicago International Remainder and Overstock
Book Exposition (CIROBE). Click on the following link to view their
directory and then click on the names in the left-hand column. You'll
then be presented with not only their contact information, but also
the company description, specialities, and minimum order requirements.
For example, here is one:

Daedalus Books
9645 Gerwig Lane
Columbia, MD 21046
Tel: (800) 333-5489 or (410) 309-2700
Fax: (800) 289-9635 or (410) 309-2711
Contact: Tamara Stock
e-mail: tstock@daedalusbooks.com
online: www.daedalus-wholesale.com
Minimums/Rights: Minimum order is 50 books/cd's or $200 retail.
Daedalus carries fine remainders in all subjects, specializing in
literature and the arts. Our carefully chosen books are remainders,
not hurts, 50% to 90% off list price. See our selection of CD's--Jazz,
World, Blues, Classical and Opera
Company Specialties: art, history, children's, literature, CD's
http://www.cirobe.com/html/program/program.html

Normally, it is just a matter of getting on their catalogue mailing
list. Wholesalers' terms vary, as do their stock. Most are generalists
(carrying a wide variety of subjects), but there are regional
wholesalers who stock books of regional interest, and wholesalers with
very specific specialities. It will be up to you find your niche and
choose the most appropriate wholesalers to deal with. It would be a
good idea to establish yourself as a business, such as getting a
business tax number, even if you don't need one to sell books in your
town.

HOW-TO BOOK

If you buy just one book, make it "A Manual on Book-Selling: How to
Open and Run a Bookstore". It's probably a bit more than you need, but
it covers everything from "Ordering and Receiving" to "Advertising and
Promotion" to "Merchandising", and more. It is readily available used,
but make sure you get the fourth edition (or later, if available).

A MANUAL ON BOOK-SELLING: How to Open and Run a Bookstore.

Thank you so much for your assistance so far. Do you know of any
remaindered-book dealers in Australia?

Hi rkmudge,

Australian booksellers rely heavily on the UK and the US for suppliers
of remaindered books, but I was able to find one large wholesaler in
Australia.

Australian Book Centre:
"Largest remainder book wholesaler in Australia."
http://www.australianbookcentre.com/

Wholesalers:
"America and England have book wholesalers. They catalog, stock and
sell to bookshops a wide range of books from many publishers.
Australia doesn't have a similar system but there are regional,
state-based, and specialist wholesalers for gift books, new age books,
health books, and so on."
Library suppliers:
"The closest to a general book wholesaler for Australia is a library
supplier. However, they only sell to libraries."

Registration costs AU$99 for 12 months access.

Bertrams Books:

supplying quality service to booksellers around the world."

Blaketon Hall Limited:

Gardners Books:

largest range of titles in stock and easy ordering facilities for any
British or American book in print."

Sandpiper Books Ltd:
"Wholesales general, trade and scholarly remainders (books that are no
