I have Cerwin-Vega E-312 speakers and can't find my specs on them. I need to know how many watts per channel they are since I just got a new amp/receiver. The receiver is 100 watts per channel. Is that a problem? |

If the new amp is 100 watts RMS, it will likely blow the speakers. The typicaly 100 watts peak rating is quite safe for most speakers. As a precaution you can wire a flashlight bulb (two C cells or two D cells type bulbs)in series with each speaker. If the bulb flashes brightly at high volumn levels you are in some danger of speaker damage. More likely the bulbs will burn out. Even at low brightness the bulbs are providing a bit of volumn compression. With the bulbs you can safely connect two speakers to each channel, thus dividing the power to each speaker by about three. The small bulbs from series string Xmass lights will protect speakers with ratings as low as 3 watts RMS, but you should likely use three speakers per channel to avoid your amplifier seeing a dangerously high impedance at high bulb brightness. With the bulbs in series the amplifier will hardly notice if these are 4 ohm or 8 ohm speakers. Neil |
