Since this is under Men's health, I'm guessing I know what you're talking about. The reason is that in that area you have an abundance of ceruminous glands, which secrete a waxy-like substance that bacteria love. (Normal sweat is just water and electrolytes, which bacteria can't grow on.) You do have these ceruminous glands in your armpits as well, but not as abundant. So that's why those two areas are much more prone to stinking than other areas on your body, but I'm guessing the abundance of the glands in the pubic area causes the difference in smell. |

Actually, the armpits and pubic area have apocrine sweat glands which is what you are talking about. Ceruminous glands are actually modified apocrine glands, but are located only in the ear, and produce cerumen, which is earwax. The odor associated with apocrine glands is a product of the bacterial digestion of their secretions. I would surmise that the mix of bacteria is different in the two areas, resulting in different metabolites of the digestive process, which results in different odors. |

Yeah, thanks for the clarification. I haven't had anatomy in a couple years, so I forgot that they're actually apocrine glands. "Ceruminous" is just such a cool word though.... Anyway, the only other thing I know is that butyric acid is one of the by products that stinks. I think it is cleaved from an ester, but I don't remember exactly. Also, maybe the difference is that you just need to wash in that area more than you do in your pits? I dunno. |

According to Wikipedia, "grundle" is slang for perineum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perineum |
