I am researching information on my great, great, great Grandfather, the Rev. Steuart King, who graduated from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland in 1787, became an Anglican priest (in a catholic country) and was cited in Church of Ireland records for marrying people of different religion out of his home. His youngest daughter was my great, great grandmother, Marianne King Goodwin, born March 3,1823 and died in NYC age age 34 on October 1, 1857, buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn I have many records on her and her father from family documents, but there is NO RECORD of their births or deaths in Dublin. A fire in 1922 there may haave destroyed them. However, I have just found out that Marianne's husband, Richard Dawson Goodwin and she were Married in Port Hope, Canada on 27 August 1845. They became US citizens. Goodwin's father was listed on the Port Hope Canada records as a Jas. Goodwin of Enniskellin, NORTHERN IRELAND! For the last 100 or so years, no one thought to look in Northern Ireland and assumed because Rev. King spent years in Dublin and environs that he was from there...but then, where did he go after he was perhpas forcibly disgraced, There are no records of Steuart King in Southern Ireland after about 1820. Did he flee to England ? Maryanne was born in 1823 and on her burial certificate is says she was born in Ireland....I am now very suspicious that she might have been born in Northeern Ireland, since her future husband came from Enniskellen NI and also that Steuart may have died there as well. My question for you is as follows: ARE THERE SEPARATE BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS FOR NORTHERN IRELAND IN THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY NOT LISTED IN DUBLIN RECORDS, AND WHO DO I CONTACT IN NORTHERN IRELAND, BELFAST, SINCE THAT IS IT'S CAPITAL TODAY. THANK YOU. |

Dear ralaw-ga, Civil registration of births and deaths began in Ireland in 1864. These records - up to 1922 when the country was split into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland - cover the entire country and are available in both the Dublin and Belfast general register offices. After 1922, the Dublin GRO (general register office) maintains these records for the 26 counties of the republic, and the Belfast GRO for the 6 counties of Northern Ireland. So, in answer to your question, the records available from Dublin are the same as the ones available from Belfast for the 19th century. Earlier birth entries will be found in parish records. Some of Ireland's parish registers were destroyed in the 1922 fire, but many still remain ("the pre-1871 records of 1006 parishes were destroyed by fire in the Public Records Office. The records of 637 parishes which were in the custody of the local clergy survived." --http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishancestors/COI.html). PRONI (Public Record Office of Northern Ireland) in Belfast maintains copies of early parish registers on microfilm: http://www.proni.gov.uk/records/private/cofiindx.htm According to their Web site, "Requests for copies of baptisms and burials before 1871 and marriages before 1845 for parishes in the Republic of Ireland should be referred to the National Archives, Ireland, Bishop Street, Dublin." Some Church of Ireland parish registers may still be held by local clergy, with copies at the National Archives and/or PRONI in Belfast. I am sorry that I'm not able to provide any more specific information, but if you would like to include any more details on the family of Marianne King and Richard D. Goodwin, or her father Stuart King, I would be happy to try and provide further suggestions. Since you said that you have many records already in your possession, I'm not sure what further information (beside the birth records) that you may be looking for.
