Question ID: 375355
I want to replace my current CD recorder - a Philips 765. My main
problems with it are that it has no output level control, i.e. to make
the volume of the recorded songs about the same, and it makes a slight
pause between the tracks when I change the tracks manually.
I want to buy a CD recorder that will make me set the recorded
level better, make the recorded CDs more even in terms of volume and
allow me to change tracks seamlessly without even a short pause or
skip.
I would be grateful for recommendations about one or more models that do this.

I am sure we can find these features in a different model, Philips was
nice enough to add recorded volume controls to their next models. I
would like to know if there is a price range you are looking to stay
within, and if size of the actual unit is an issue. I have at least
three solid suggestions, the restrictions would be pricing and size.

Hi Mother911,
Thanks for the quick response.
Size and price are not a problem - please let me have your
recommendations and any specs that you might have.

Thanks

Hi cescoffy,

I found four units which meet your requirements, and have some truly
nice features, I figured that since some have higher record speeds,
and some have mp3 playback it gives you some features to choose from.
Personally I trust the Sony and Harman Kardon units the most.

Harman Kardon CDR30

A little less expensive, but also in the high end of this group is the
HK crd30. It is also a two cd unit which allows cd to cd recording.
There are 4 independent coax and optical inputs on this unit. It will
record on cdr and cdrw's as well as having a 4x dub which allows
recording at 1/4 the total time of playback. For example, a 60-minute
cd can be speed dubbed in 15 minutes. It will also run at 2x for
programmed playlists. This deck also allows for mp3 playback.

The unit has a comparative price of about $400 depending on location.
Best price:
Energix

Of special interest to you, feature #18 and #22 on the front panel display.
#18 Analog record level control
#22 Digital level controls

Philips CDR820

Still on the higher end of the pricing scale is this 4 cd unit. It has
a tray that allows you to playback 4 cds with standard playback
features (jukebox track programming etc) and allows the recording of
one cd from the other three. It uses a carousel that allows you to
change two of the cds while recording or playing from the third. There
are three different inputs on the rear of the unit, analog, digital
and optical. It will record on cdr and cdrw's as well as having the
same 4x and 2x dub features of the Harman Kardon unit. This deck also
allows for mp3 playback, and can be programmed to play back or record
up to 99 tracks. It also allows for keyboard connection to type in
titles and track information.

This unit has a comparative price of about $400 depending on location.

Pioneer PDR-W839

Starting to get into what I consider to be a more reasonably priced
unit based on its abilities is the PDR-W839. This unit has only a
standard 1x and an optional 2x record speed. It is a 4 disc unit,
although on this unit I do not see how it allows any cd to be changed
while in use. Like the Philips unit, it allows all types of 4 disc
utility playback functions. It has three inputs on the rear of the
unit, analog, digital and optical. It will record on CDR and CDRW.
Like most multiple cd units it allows programming of up to 30 tracks
from any cd in the unit to play and or record (recording of course
would only allow programming from the other three discs). There is
also a connection to a keyboard for this unit. It will not playback
mp3s.

This unit has a comparative price of about $400 depending on location.
Best Price:
I found only pricing for used items or refurbished items from $180.00 (Amazon.com)
I also found other prices of 299.00.
Epinions has the price range from $200-300.

Of special interest to you from page 52 of the manual is the line:
"6 Adjust the recording level, if necessary:
? To adjust the recording level, see step 4 of Digital synchro
recording on page 40.
? To adjust the analog recording level, see step 4 of Analog synchro
recording on page 41."

Sony RCD-W500C

I am starting to form the opinion that the price range of $250-400
dollars is normal, despite some units that seemingly were under $200.
The unit has what seems to be a standard 2x and 4 x high speed
function. This unit has two drawers, one for playback one for record,
it also allows the two drawers to be used as playback for programmed
play or straight play. You can program in 25 steps for continuous
play, or recording. It has two inputs on the rear of the unit, analog
and optical. It will record on CDR and CDRW. It will playback mp3s.

This unit has a comparative price of about $300 depending on location.

It was quite an adventure digging up this information for you, and
educational, I had not realized that units under $200 would not have
these standard features. The ones I did find were so poorly rated I
passed on them.

Hi Carlos,

I am so glad you liked the selection, I tried to remain objective and
not insert any personal opinion. With that said, now that you've
decided I am glad to say I would have chosen the HK as well. Harmon
Kardon makes such amazing equipment, I wish I could afford to build a
full rack of it. Best of luck with your new gear.
