in 1941 ted williams batted .406. I believe this was before the
sacrifice flyball rule went into effect. What would he have batted had
the sacrifice fly rule been in effect at that time?

Hi redsoxone,
This is a very interesting question. I doubted I would find the answer
and was surprised when I did. Below is a quote which states what Ted
Williams's batting average would have been had the sacrifice fly rule
been in effect when Ted batted .406.

"But by today's rules Ted would have entered the day at .405 and ended
at .411. What?"
.406

The above page is very interesting and well worth taking a look. It
also gives a more detailed breakdown of when and how the sacrifice fly
rule was used, changed etc. over the years before becoming a permanent
part of the rulebook in 1954.

Here is another site that gives a brief description of when the
sacrifice fly rule was first adopted, thrown out and reinstated again:
Use your browsers find or search feature to search for 'sacrifice fly
rule'. This rule will be found under the following heading on the
