If someone is suffering from auditory hallucinations of electric current, loud noises such as a dog bark, a car horn, a doorbell, a metallic sound, and garbled voices only at night, and shaking for a second or two, what is the most probable diagnosis? Antipsychotic and SSRI antidepressant meds make the symptoms worse. |

Although I am not a doctor yet, I did work in a neuro-oncology clinic for a little while and those complaints are similar to ones I heard from some of our patients. Depending upon it's position within the brain, a tumor can cause all sorts of strange audio visual effects. I would suggest the person get a CAT scan. Thats the a good way to diagnos most problems within the brain |

I would see a neurologist and get an EEG to see if this is seizure activity, as these may be simple partial seizures, possibly from temporal lobe epilepsy. Since antipsychotic and SSRI medications lower the seizure threshold (i.e., make it easier to have seizures), it would make sense that these would make the symptoms worse. Make sure that the neurologist knows the exact symptoms you are describing, so that s/he can place the electrodes correctly; temporal lobe epilepsy can be missed on a regular EEG. As for a brain scan, I wouldn't bother with the CT scan, which will not give you the resolution and definition that you need in this case. The neurologist will probably order a T2-weighted MRI instead, to get a better picture. Hope this helps. |
