What is the best GPS Handheld Unit on the market today, based on these criteria: I need a good combination of driver-oriented features (e.g. road maps!) and hiking-oriented features (e.g. water-resistance, light weight!). My price limit is around $250, but somewhat flexible. I don't have a lot of time to sift through links, so please provide a recommendation (and maybe 1 or 2 runner-ups) based on other people's opinions (reviewers, discussion group postings, etc). Thanks |

Try out the Lowrance Globalmap 100. I use mine for offshore sailing but also get a lot of fun using it on country drives. It can be factory fitted with a detailed map of your particular area and also with the complete world but this lacks fine detail. Fully waterproof and able to run off a cigarette lighter plug. Initial cost is a bit higher than your requested $250 but a working secondhand unit is as good as a new one. They all give your latitude/longtitude and its up to you to relate this to any paper maps. The handheld Globalmap has 50% more info. storage than the benchtop Humminbird NS10, but also a good unit. Knowing where you are is half the battle when lost or in trouble. The other half is your two way radio to let your rescuers know as well. Add an E.P.I.R.B. [Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon] satellite tracking unit, and your well equipped. P.S. Two young men died of exposure in the "outback" of Western Australia only a hundred miles or so from help, simply because they had no knowledge of rescue equipment available on the market. How much is your life worth? |
