I need to know if a norfolk terrier is a good pet for me. I am 60,
live quietly with my wife, have a heart condition which requires that
I exercise.

I also need to know if there are any breeders in northern New jersey
or even in NJ itself. I need to know general purchase price for these
dogs and any special training methods needed to use with them. The
internet is somewhat skimpy on any information.

Hi shimel,

According to the American Kennel Club, a Norfolk Terrier sounds like
a good choice for you and your wife. The AKC describes this breed as
loyal, people-oriented and charming! Since this breed was bred to
chase rats, vermin and fox, a Norfolk terrier would make a great
canine walking companion! The breed has coarse wiry and straight hair,
that may need to be brushed often, but sheds little.

http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/norfolk.cfm

Doggies.com says these dogs do well in small living quarters, provided
they get plenty of exercise, have a lifespan of 12-15 years, and loves
to play.

Drawbacks with this breed are stated as thus: ?Choke collars must not
be used with this breed as they have sensitive tracheas. Also, adult
teeth may begin to grow in over baby teeth. Some Norfolk Terriers may
suffer from eye and back problems.?

Locating Breeders:

This breed IS scarce, and I was unable to locate more than ONE breeder
in New Jersey. Other than the one in NJ, Ohio is the next closest I
found to New Jersey! I was unaware when I took this question that
Norfolk Terriers are a rare breed!

I found just one breeder in NJ, and the only contact information is
this e-mail address:
Vallie Beckwith
LOCATION: NJ
EMAIL: vhbdogs@hac.net

http://www.infodog.com/brag/breepage/b107520.htm

The Infodog site lists 651 dog breeders in NJ, but only the one
Norfolk Terrier breeder.
http://www.infodog.com/brag/breedbystate/nj.htm

This site lists 1,086 dog breeders in NY, and none of them include
Norfolk Terriers!

This site lets you search by zip code. Since I don?t know your zip
code, I entered the NJ 11950 zip code on the next link. You may get
more results if you enter your actual zip code.

A personal story about locating a Norfolk Terrier:
http://www.norfolkterrier.org/articles_f-j/insearchofanorfolklessonslearned.html

Price:

"Cost of puppies varies depending on location, breeder and pedigree history"
http://www.dog-names.org.uk/norfolk-terrier.htm

These dogs are scarce, with a hefty price! This site has some Norfolk
terrier pups for sale, with the price ranging from $1200 to $2500. You
might consider clicking the e-mail links to see if these sellers still
have puppies for sale, or when they expect to have more. Breeders
often know of other breeders, and they be able to put you in touch
with someone!

Norwich and Norfolk Terrier Club
According to this club, Nofolk terriers are hard to come by! ?Norwich
and Norfolk terriers can be difficult to acquire. Litter sizes are
small. Consequently the supply is limited. Puppies of these breeds are
not easy to come by so you will need both patience and perseverance in
your search.?

For $5, the club will send you a list of breeders:
Norwich and Norfolk Terrier Club

330 Lake Meade Rd
York Springs, PA 17372-8737

You can see by the statistics found on this site, that the numbers of
registered Norfolk terriers are low:

http://clubs.akc.org/nntc/statistics/stats.html#dog_registration

There you go, shimel. You may also consider finding a loveable dog,
just waiting for a new family, at your local animal shelter! Good luck
with your with your new four-footed family member!

I bet Coco has caused a boom in the market for Norfok terriers. What a
cutie she is! Normally, I don't find little bitty dogs to be very
appealing, but when I saw Coco strutting her stuff on a recently
televised dog show, I was totally charmed.
