I am looking for disease-specific statistics about the top 50 diseases
that lead to medical malpractice cases. So far I have only found
information about the top 5 by dollar value (colon cancer, breast
cancer, appendicitis, lung cancer, heart attack). For each disease, I
would like to know either dollar values awarded or number of
malpractice cases lodged. Other information about malpractice of each
disease would be appreciated, such as the usual reason for malpractice
(i.e. whether usually alleges delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis,
incorrect treatment, etc.), lawsuit success rates, or other stats. If
you find a huge list of such stats for more than 50 diseases, that
would be greatly appreciated. For each stat, I need enough information
to cite it (i.e. source, year, paper/article title, etc.), and it
needs to be reputable (i.e. not just some malpractice lawyer's web
site hype). |

Hi
I would prefer US-wide. However, I would accept any state data or if
unavailable as US data, even any foreign country data that would help
prioritize the various medical conditions according to their
visibility in malpractice law.
Regarding "A great many malpractice claims aren't disease related.
For instance, claims pertaining to pregancy, or to care received in an
ER by a
victim of a car crash.", --> in this case, I would consider the
medical conditions to be pregnancy and car accidents (or perhaps "ER
care from car accidents" or "head injury from car accidents"). So any
data on malpractice related to pregnancy, childbirth, ER care,
particular surgeries, particular drugs, would be useful, and
acceptable as part of the top 50. Maybe I should have called the
question "top 50 medical diseases/procedures/drug errors/medical
events/misdiagnoses for malpractice".
thanks.
