If the movie you're speaking of is "Les Invasions Barbares," or "The
Barbarian Invasions," a 2003 film about a dying man and his family, I
can tell you the name and artist of the final song. Is this the
correct movie?

Thanks for confirming that this is the right movie. The song is
"L'amitié," performed by Françoise Hardy.

I found this information in a post in an Internet Movie Database forum
about "The Barbarian Invasions":

"Can someone translate the final song or at least the gist of it. It
sounded very beautiful, but I think it should have been subtitled...

The song is called L'amitié, by Françoise Hardy... You can read the
original text of the song (and hear it) at:

http://www.fhardy.de/html/songtexte.html (choose L'amitié).

Here is a rough translation :

Friendship

Many of my friends came from the clouds
With sun and rain as their only bagage
They made the season of sincere friendships
The most beautiful season among the four on earth

They have the sweetness of the most beautiful landscapes
And the faithfulness of birds of passage
In their heart is engraved an infinite tenderness
But sometimes in their eyes creeps sadness

Then they come to warm up at my place
and you too, you will come

You will be able to go back at the end of the clouds
And again smile to many other faces
Give around you a little of you tenderness
When another one will want to hide his sadness from you

Since one doesn't know what life gives us
It is possible that myself I am not anybody anymore
If I still have a friend who really understands me
I will forget both my tears and my sorrows

Then maybe I will come to your place
To warm up my heart to your fire"

Here is confirmation that the song is indeed "L'amitié," sung by Françoise Hardy:

"I watched the gorgeous French-Canadian film The Barbarian Invasions.
I loved the end credits song, L'amitie sung by Francoise Hardy which
was very appropriate for the movie."

Here you'll find a concert clip of Françoise Hardy singing "L'amitié"

Google search strategy:

Google Web Search: "barbarian invasions" l'amitie OR l'amitié hardy
