Please check: http://lfmsdm.mit.edu/sdm/ I need more information about SDM program at MIT, which is not available on its website. Contacting the program administration is one option, but I thought to first try here. I want general information, which involves at least the following: 1) Ratio of number of applications accepted to total number of applications 2) Reputation/Ranking of the program (news articles, Business Week / US News ranking etc). 3) Placement statistics (percentage who got job at graduation, salary, job profiles, etc) 4) Comparison of above statistics (1, 2 and 3) for <13 months full time> and <13 to 24-month on-campus career-compatible> program. Comparison need not be accurate, approximate data is sufficient. Thanks. |

Hi anonymous3141- This is not an official answer, but I'll try my best to help. As you know, MIT has some of the most selective graduate programs in the world. SDM is a joint program offered by the Sloan (business) and Engineering schools and graduates get the best of both worlds with an SM in engineering and an SM or MBA in business. Wow, I want to sign up! Page 19 of the brochure indicates that "50 to 55 mid-career professionals" are admitted to SDM each year. In addition, page 21 lists specific partner companies, which seems to me to mean that subtle preference may be given to employees of those companies. ------ General information about admissions rates and reputation ------ MIT has the top-ranked engineering school in the country, according to USNEWS 2002. The acceptance rate in 2000 was 29.5% to MIT engineering and for Sloan, the acceptance rate was 17.5%. Sloan was ranked #5, but as you know, the USNEWS rankings are of debatable precision. More on reputation from USNEWS: Reputation by academics: Sloan 4.8, MIT-Eng 5.0 Reputation by recruiters: Sloan 4.4 (Harvard/Northwestern: 5.0), MIT-Eng 5.0 MIT makes special arrangements for corporate-sponsored, such as reserving 100% of its distance learning slots for corporate-supported students. Personal experience indicates that those supported by their employer tend to stick with their employer after completion of the educational program, at least for a short period of time. ------ Specific admissions info (see http://lfmsdm.mit.edu/sdm/docs/cg.pdf p.4) ------ Applicants: 82 Accepted: 52 (a very high 63%!) Matriculated: 36 US Citizens: 55% Fellows with Post-Bach Degree: 60% Company-sponsored 12 Women: 6 Minorities: 0 (surprising, to me) Average Age: 32 Average Work Experience: 10 years Distance Leanring Students 24-month, Company Sponsored: 19 (seems contradictory, but this is what is in the guide) 13-month, self supporting: 14 13-month, company supported: 1 24-month, research assistants: 2 ----- Sources ------ 1. website as provided 2. I found some information on salary from the MIT Career Services website but it seems like these folks like to keep their salary quiet. For 2004, only two salaries--$70k and $100k --were reported from SDM grads. 2003: no results 2002: 1 result (92k) 2001: no results It is possible that the numbers for the corresponding LFM program may include SDM grads: For example, 1999 for LFM shows: (10 reported) (low 25k) (avg 78k) (high 100k) ----- Source ----- http://training.mit.edu/salary?year=2004&type=course |

I know this doesn't help you, but I have been going to MIT for three years now and I have never heard of the program until I saw this question |
