Hello digital29-ga,

First of all you need to know that there was no war between Serbia and
Yugoslavia, because Serbia as a federal republic was integral part of
Yugoslavia. Second thing is that as we all know there was a war, but
in between Federal republics of Yugoslavia and more closely war
between the people inside of each republic, because they were living
in mixed marriages during the last century or so. Beside that, on such
a small area you have three different religions.

Now with all this there was a very complicated situation from the
World War 2, because Serbian people split and one part took the side
of Partisans (Communists) with Allies, the other stayed on the other
side with Cetniks (Monarchists), King?s guard and army at that time
rebel movement and they were on their own with the Allies, but against
all the others. On the other hand in Croatia there were again people
who were with Partisans in the same constellation and on the same side
as Serbian people, but you had as well Ustase which were on the side
with Germans, but again against all the others like Cetniks. All this
I am writing to you so that you can understand one of the main causes
of the war in between the republics of ex Yugoslavia. During World War
2 all those sides were killing each other, because of the ideals,
land, whatever stupidity war can bring. And from those times people
remembered who killed whose brother, sister, father or mother. When ex
president of Yugoslavia Tito died in 1981. the president ship was maid
out of 6 presidents each from one Federal republic and two
co-presidents from two other regions. So, you can imagine what kind of
hunger for independence was there considering that Slovenia and
Croatia were more turned to the west (USA and some EU countries) and
Serbia and Montenegro more to the East (Russia, China). Of course
there was a conflict of interests and some republics wanted to leave
out of that system. And by the law of ex Yugoslavia none of the
countries couldn?t leave if they don?t have written permission from
all of the other republics. So, some of the republics wanted to have
that by force, some wanted to stop it by force, all of them remembered
World War 2 that some one ?on the other side? killed some one from his
family, then a little but of religion conflict?.and that was it. You
had a war between, presidents who were transferring it to the people;
sometimes that war was in between two villages, two neighbours, two
towns, two regions. You had a mixture of interests from the west,
importers of weapons, drugs, illegal immigrants, game for USA, food
for media, challenge for EU, etc. And if anyone from ex Yugoslavia
thought rational at that time all of this wouldn?t happen.

The problem of Kosovo was a little bit different, but still with very
much similar context as the previous war. But this problem you can not
explain in a few words looking at the recent years. The initial
problem with Kosovo you have to search a little bit earlier than any
other root of conflict. Anyway let?s briefly just establish a couple
of facts starting from the year of 1000 A.C. Around those years and
much after that, Slavic nations were living on all areas where at
present you have Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Greece,
Albania, Bosnia, etc. Before Nemanjic Dynasty in the area where is
today Albania all the Slavic people were ruled by kings Tihomir,
Glava, Golem, Slava, Ivica, Mihaila Voisaljevic (1077). Not far from
Skadar on river Bojana even today there are still remains of the first
Serbian King Mihailo and his son Bodin. Some people would like to
prove different, but unfortunately for them Slavic people were always
on that piece of land. Justification for that are many orthodox (Serb)
churches from 9th of 12th century. When the Turks came in 14th century
they were blackmailing tribe Arbanas, one of the Slavic Christian
tribes that they are going to kill all the people from the tribe if
they don?t take Islam as religion and obey their orders in full. This
tribe accepted the order and from those times Arbanas remain Muslims.
But, like that Turks gave all the rights to this tribe and all the
power to rule on their land. And since the richness of land of today?s
Albania were not very good for agriculture this tribe moved north.
Trough the centuries all previous mentioned land was under the Turks,
even if some of the tribes had more rights. After many years of being
under the Turks, after First and Second Rebellion of Serbs against
Turks starting from 1804 and then after World War 1 in 1918, Serbia
was one of the strongest military forces on Balkan. At that time
Serbian King Alexander came to the idea to unite all Slavic nations on
Balkan. And he succeeded naming it ?The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and
Slovenians?. By many people, historians and all the others who where
studying history of Balkans, that was the biggest mistake. Not so many
years after the King was killed and the kingdom got the prince
Alexander 2nd. But, unfortunately World War 2 came, the prince is
expelled from the country and communists lead by Tito came to the idea
to create Yugoslavia, country that existed until 1991. The story in
the middle I mentioned before. But, even during the times of Tito
people from the official region of Yugoslavia called Kosovo started
with demonstrations in order to bring to the point the idea of
independence. The final, but never publicly proclaimed, was the idea
of forming the Big Albania. This project includes: Kosovo with south
regions of Serbia including second biggest town Nis, then part of
Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and part of Montenegro. If you search a
bit over the internet you will find a lot about this subject. That is
why even today you have paramilitary problems in Macedonia and in
south of Serbia with people that call them self?s freedom fighters.
That is why even today you have a situation where Albanian people are
massively buying property from people who live in those areas. And
believe me they are offering unbelievably good money. The property
situation was as well a part of Kosovo for many years. So, that is why
there is a demand for independence of the new Kosovo government and
that is why you will have cohesion of Kosovo and Albania after they
get independence. To get back to the story, the situation after the
war in Yugoslavia in 1994 got worse. In the times of Milosevic
dictatorship knowing their plans for Big Albania and knowing that he
lost one war because he wanted more territories for himself, the
repression over Albanians from Kosovo got very serious. Milosevic
restricted their human rights to the maximum. Many of those people
were killed and never found. It was a horrible time. The only way to
get him of their back was to create a situation coordinated with the
people from the western countries, again coordinated with the Albanian
lobby from the American Senate and who wanted Milosevic to resign.
Milosevic on the other hand, seeing that there is a chance to loose
one of the regions of Serbia, started massively killings on Kosovo and
that triggered bombing of Serbia including Belgrade in 1999.

As I said, the entire previous story is just in brief. There are many
details about the war in ex Yugoslavia and many details about the
Kosovo problem. I am sure that here there would be people who agree or
disagree with me and if anyone starts to argue about these two
subjects, at the end we would all come to the question ?Who is older:
chicken or egg?? Anyway, you can always find and check independent
history books and internet pages where you can read more about it.

Hope that you are satisfied with the answer. If you would like to know
anything else, please don?t hesitate to ask.
