I have used Corel 8 for several years with no problems. A few weeks
ago both Draw and Photo Paint started crashing on launching or within
a few seconds. A blue screen of death says:
"Windows
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0059C8D. The current
application will be terminated"

More recently it has been referencing 0028:C0059D2D.

Occasionally a ?This Program has performed an Illegal Operation?
window has appeared instead with detail such as:
"MFINDEXER caused an exception 10H in module MFC42.DLL at 016f:5f41ceae.

I have reinstalled my OS, Windows 98 SE, the entire Corel 8 suite
(several times), done the usual Registry Clean and Seek and generally
tidied up all round. CorelSCAN does not seem affected and all other
apps seem fine too. Before things went pear-shaped, the only
potential causes I can finger are running Scandisk in DOS and also
allowing a friend to download her digital camera to my PC, the
software for which I subsequently uninstalled.

My PC system runs with a 1300 MHz Athlon, 498 MB DDR RAM and an S3
Pro-SavageDDR graphics card.

Checking with Google against the ?0028:? references shows many more
questions than answers, mainly associated with games and browsers.

Any ideas as to the cause or (even better) a solution would be greatly
appreciated. Please ask any questions you need. When it comes to
this side of IT my rating is probably the novice side of competent.

Go to this site http://www.memtest86.com/
and download memtest86.
Follow the instructions to create a bootable floppy diskette.
Boot the floppy and allow memtest86 to run for several hours or overnight.
Occasionally check on the program.
You should have NO errors. If you do have errors, then there is a
problem with your RAM memory. Power down PC and remove the memory and
reinstall. Run memtest86 again. If errors continue, consider buying
new memory.

Hi zark!

Tried memtest86. Believe it or not it ran for over 18 hours and was
up to 30 passes with no errors before I finally had to reclaim my PC.
How many passes does it usually run? Guess I may have to go on
holiday and leave it running next time!

Thanks for the tip though.

Standard Windows troubleshooting includes keeping your hard drive
clean. You can follow the instructions provided at:
http://www.theofficeexperts.com/cleanyourpc.htm (I wrote them, so I am
able to post the link here, thanks very much).

CorelDRAW 8, specifically, often caused me problems when running it
with Microsoft Office and Word in particular. Believe it or not, we
recently purchased CorelDraw 12.0, and I find the problem is still
there to a small degree. I know you did not ask, but for the price,
CorelDRAW 12 is far easier to use; we hesitated to buy it because we
figured it was so many versions newer that we'd hate the learning
curve--not so. It has many features that 8.0 did not.

More *meat*:
When you get an error, the operative word is not the location "0028",
but the file in which the error occurred, in your case: MFC42.DLL.
The mfindexer is the file that places itself in the Windows startup
when you install CorelDraw, and I have never found it necessary to
run. I Start-->Run and type msconfig and hit enter. I go to the
startup tab. I uncheck that application so it doesn't start up with
Windows.

Bottom line: I suspect you did not clean out your C:\windows\temp
folder and that following the directions at the link above will help
tremendously.

I hope this helps, even a little bit!

Thanks for that dreamboat!

Your instructions are very clear indeed and I followed them to the
letter. I was doubtful of their impact - as I had conducted all the
suggested stages already however not necessarily in the same sequence.
Sad to report that situation regarding Corel 8 is still the same and
I had already disabled mfindexer on the Startup file.

My current thinking is that having already reinstalled MFC42.DLL (as
suggested by another party), when my friend installed Olympus Camedia
it may have overwritten other shared files as well and this was not
corrected when I uninstalled her software. She is lending me her
installation CD to see whether I can determine any other obvious
shared-file Version discrepancies with my Win 98 disc. Does that make
sense to you?

Thanks very much for your suggestion and I will run the sequence again
on a regular basis. Please advise any other ideas you may have.

Well, it may not be easy, but Win98 is the easiest from which to
reformat without losing a lot of user settings, so if it comes to
that, at least it's only Win98. :)

I might uninstall CorelDraw. Then delete all CorelDraw files from
c:\program files. Then remove it from the registry. Then reinstall. If
you do this (or if you've already done it) and it doesn't work, then I
would seriously consider the hard drive reformat.

Good luck to you!

Also, make sure you don't have more than 500 Fonts installed. That's
known to cause all kinds of problems.
