hughgo,

Can you give us any other details about the painting:

- Is it done in watercolor, oils?
- Is it on paper, canvas, wood?
- What is the subject?
- Approximate size?
- Any other writing on the front or back?
- Might the last name be "Vigil"?

There is a contemporary New Mexico fresco artist named "Frederico
Vigil", but he was born in 1946.

Thanks, huntsman

answer to question
the painting is obviously done by an experienced ,skilled artist /oil
on canvas the size of frame opening / 18 1/2 tall + 24 1/2 wide =
canvas is stretched over wood frame 19 1/4 tall + 25 1/8 wide + 15/16
thick ~ picture frame has a professionly done plaque (F.VIGL)riveted
to the bottom center/front of picture signed (clearly) but stylisticly
(f.vigl 1923)~oddly on the back (bottom inside of the streached canvas
is printed in ink (A F BANKS chicago) note - one wouldn't see this
unles the canvas is peeled back from the frame / the subject is a
landscape , in the background is a snow covered mountain whitch leads
down to a valley & back up again to the foreground whitch is a large
bolder & what appears to be a "suaro" cactus / bolder & cactus are
surounded by brush and smaller rocks / the painting & frame look to be
old (1923) is a logical date thank you

I wonder if this could be the artist. He also has an oil painting but
it doesn't seem to match your description. I'll just leave this in
case a researcher would like to follow up.

Bedrich Feigl (Prague 1884 – 1965 London)

“Harem”, signed and dated in the lower right Feigl 1923 (?), inscribed
in the lower middle Harem, black chalk drawing coloured by
water-colour on paper, 20 x 25 cm, matted.
