Hello isletakeachance,

I have compiled some different tech support rankings for you to answer
your question. The quick answer (from my March 2004 copy of Consumer
Reports) is:

Desktops: Apple (74/100), Dell (62/100), Gateway (61/100), HP
(54/100), Compaq (51/100)

Notebooks: Apple (82/100), IBM (69/100), Gateway (64/100), Dell
(60/100), Toshiba (59/100)

-----------------------------------------

The survey that I would personally put the most faith in is the latest
Consumer Reports survey. If you want the latest information, you can
subscribe to Consumer Reports Online and get the latest rankings
(dated June 2004) for $4.95/month (you would only have to subscribe
for one month to get the information).

A free version (dated June 2003) can be found here:
http://www.consumerreports.org/main/detailv3.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id%20=305449
Note however, that this information is a pretty dated already.

For technical support, the top three companies in order are Apple,
Dell then Gateway. Note however, that recently Dell seems to be
slipping in customer service because of growing pains (see:
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103_2-5162141.html?tag=nl )

I highly recommend that you get a copy of the Consumer Reports
rankings for Desktops and Notebooks if you want comprehensive and
independent ranking. You can subscribe at
http://www.consumerreports.org

If you do not want to subscribe to their online service, you can
probably have a look at the June 2004 issue at your local library.

PC World's latest survey (December 2003) mixes Reliability and
Technical Support. You can find the best and worst manufacturers for
Desktops and Notebooks here:
http://msn.pcworld.com/reviews/article/1,aid,112915,pg,6,00.asp

PC World also did a survey in the December 2002 (one year older than
the above link) issue where 30,000 readers responded.

The top three desktop companies (in tech support) were Apple, IBM and
ABS. You can see the other companies (in order here:
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,105854,pg,10,00.asp

The top three notebook companies (in tech support) were IBM, Toshiba
and Gateway. You can see the other companies here:

You can see a combined view with some of the major players here:

If you are interested in the top ten Best Web Support Sites of 2004,
you can find them ranked here by the Association of Support
Professionals: http://www.asponline.com/awards.html

I hope this was the type of answer you were expecting. Please let me
know if you require any clarification and I will do my best to respond
as soon as possible.

All the best,

tisme-ga

I would have to say Dell has the over all best support. Now i am not
quite sure about laptops paticularly. I have been a avid pc user for a
very long time and as such i do pick up the occasional computer
magazine. And whenever they do a ratings on quality of products and
support of the products of the many they list. Dell is usully with in
the top 2 and almsot if not always in the top 3.
