Shayroni --

According to Hoerr Nursery, of Peoria, IL, a ton of topsoil covers
about 300 square feet at a depth of one inch (measures are approximate
because moisture levels in topsoil can vary highly):

300 square feet is 33.3 square yards (9 square feet to a square yard).
To get to 4" of depth, you'd be down to 8.33 square yards.

What about the weight - a ton of topsoil is a weight amount - so
wouldn't the moisture also effect the actual amount of soil?

Thanks

Shayroni --

Absolutely moisture effects volume (drier soil have more voluminous)
which is why the linked account notes "about 300 square feet" for 1".
However, Hoerr Nursery is a well-known midwestern landscaper and its
what they use for planning of lawns, berms and all.

In my experience, most landscapers sell their products in cubic yards
-- allowing a better estimate of how much space that mulch or gravel
or topsoil will cover.

The Google search strategy used to get an approximation was:
"one ton of topsoil"

maybe that last link did not answer your question

125 lbs/ cubic foot.

1 sq yd = 3ft x 3ft = 9 sq ft
9 sq ft x .3 ft = 3 cubic feet for 1 yd at 4 inches = 375 lbs/yd = 5.3 sq yds

Typical topsoil is about 1/2 cubic yard per ton, so 18 inches divded
by 4 = 4.5 square yards. Figure 5 or 6 square yards if the 4 inch
layer is not packed down, meaning has lots of entraped air. Neil
