I am interested in creating an electronic database for all the books
that I own. Ideally, I would like to use a cheap handheld barcode
scanner to scan in the barcode on the back of the book. (I think the
format is EAN-13, which encodes the ISBN number for the book.)
Hopefully, there is software available which will match the ISBN with
the title, author, perhaps even the Dewey decimal number. I know that
barcoding kits are available, where you print out your own barcodes
and have a database of them, but I am trying to avoid typing in all of
the author and title information by hand. I would also like this
system to be as cheap and easy to use as possible.
In your answer, please cover the following points:
- Is software which correlates ISBN with author and title is available
for home use?
- Is there a single system which will go from barcode to database of
books, without using multiple programs?
- Any other information you can find about pricing, the information
available from ISBN, or a comparison of multiple systems.
I am not sure that what I am looking for even exists for books (I know
that it does for DVDs). If there is no way to get around typing in
book titles by hand, that is fine for an answer, just please recommend
a barcode scanner and software. Feel free to ask for clarifications.
