Is there anyway to get a HP photosmart S20 slide scanner to work with
OSX?  I have searched around for a while and I can not find one driver
that works.  The closest I came was a program called Vuescan, but that
does not work.
Please Help.

gimp is a group devoted to making driver packages for mac OS's ,their
gimp-print driver has over 600 printer drivers to give you an idea

download the gimp.app, but you have to have the apple x11.app which
you can get from apple's site if you don't already have it

for the actual program, i would recommend photoshop, their "twain
acquire" option under the file>import menu should find your scanner

Twain by itself is just a protocol.  It looks for hooks in a program's API.
All twain does is interface the application to its existing drivers
(in Windows).   The situation is similar on *nix platforms - - for
twain to work,  the proper "twain compliant" device driver must
already exist!

I have the s20,  and I am sorely disappointed that it will not even
work properly under Win2k SP4 (locks up after first scan,  needing
power cycling folowwed by logoff/logon between scans).  It broke when
I updated from SP2 to SP4.  I have to dual boot Win98 to use it (it
works fine in Win98).

It's pretty left-handed of HP,  considering they advertise this model
to support Win2k,  not to provide driver updates.  Their
justification?  "It's out of warranty".   Typical of today's low-end,
mass-produced market.


Solution?  None,  unless you want to try and reverse-engineer the
existing drivers,  and then write your own drivers from there.  Too
much monkey business for me!   The only viable workaround is either
dual boot / two machines / Windows emulator.
