Chemical control
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/7040/article.html.
There are many chemical pesticides available to the home grower of
orchids to control diseases and insect pests. Some chemicals must
actually be sprayed onto a pest to be effective - these are contact
poisons. Some are effective only after they have been consumed by an
insect - these are stomach poisons. Some chemicals, called systemics,
are actually taken up by the plants and then moved all through the
plant, so that for example, mealybugs feeding on the roots will be
killed by a pesticide that was sprayed onto the leaves. Some chemicals
have a fumigant action, that is the vapour of the chemical can enter
the insect's breathing tubes and kill the insect that way. Not all
pesticide compounds kill all species equally well. It is very
important to identify the pest or disease accurately, so that one can
choose the most effective chemical to use.
Particular chemicals will not be mentioned in this article, because
the range of available chemicals does change with time. The grower
should only use those chemicals that can be purchased at the local
garden centre, as these are ones registered for use by the homeowner.
Growers should not buy chemicals in other states that are not
registered in the ACT, or get small jars of this or that that from a
registered nurseryman. The use of these chemicals in the ACT by the
likes of you or me is unlawful, not to mention dangerous.
Always mix up and apply chemicals according to the instructions. Wear
long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, rubber gloves and shoes. Apply
the chemical in a manner to minimise the amount that gets on you, but
delivers a good coverage on the plants, especially the undersurface of
the leaves. I tend to do my spraying by setting the plants out on the
lawn in long rows very early in the morning. This way I can spray the
plants before the wind comes up and before it gets hot. Never spray
plants in the heat of a summer's day, as these chemicals are more
likely to damage the plants then. Make sure to wash all of the spray
equipment carefully after use. Wash yourself thoroughly after applying
the insecticide and before eating, drinking or smoking. Wash the
clothes you wore.

Disease Control on Orchids:
"Single plants with fungus problems can be treated with ground
cinnamon. The orchid leaves must be damp enough for the cinnamon to
stick to the leaves. Sprinkle cinnamon on affected area, allow leaves
to dry for approximately one week, drying out the affected area."
