I am looking for the name and author of a children's book that my boys
read and loved in the 1980's.  It was a humorous story about a gang of
would-be robbers named Fat Phil, Seminole Maurice and Murderous B.
Sutcliff.  I believe it was maybe a second or third grade reading

Would you happen to remember anything else about the book?  Any other
details from the plot?

What was the gang trying to rob?  A bank?  A train?

I think that they were trying to rob a bank, but after a series of
misadventures they ended up somehow being good guys.  I think that
they gave the bank teller a misspelled note, etc.   I really don't
remember too many of the plot details.  The illustrations were simple,
not too detailed or colorful.
