This is a magical stunt and not a magic trick as such so I do not
believe gives away any magical secrets. I saw a performer ask for an
oversize pack of cards to be shuffled by the audience . He said it
might not work but was fun when it did and then went through each card
one by one looking at the next three or four cards that were to follow
and told a story with the cards as characters linking the cards
together e.g. 8 may be ?ate? in the story. The contrived links were
even funnier. It was a comic stunt (I am pretty sure he did not
substitute the cards) which obviously has a set of rules and is a
memory challenge. Can you help me find the rules?

The description of the effect you have given is a little vague.
However, I beleive I may know the effect you have in mind.

The effect you are probably looking for is titled Sam The Bellhop by
Frank Everhart. The common variation is actually a variation of an
effect called "Sam and Moe" published in the late 1930's with no
credits to the originator.

There are several versions/variations of that effect to be found
currently, all for a very reasonable price if you are a magic
hobbiest/enthusiast, or planning to perform the effect as part of your
magic routine. Not such a great investment however, if you are just
looking to know the secret.

And if you have the money to invest, you may be able to pick up
something a little more antique.

I would suggest contacting your local (or on-line) magic shop for help
locating the effect.

Two such DVD resources for that effect that I know of are Doc Eason's
Bar Magic Volume 2, and Bill Malone's On The Loose Volume 1.

I hope that helps you in your search.

Sincerely,
Wayne Stevenson

Thanks for the reply Wayne.
I shall definitely be purchasing it and comparing. I think it may have
been a variation of this as the pack was definitely randomly shuffled
by an audience member (unless I missed something!).
It was definitely a "playing card playlet". Fun to learn I thought . I
am just an amateur interested in mind, memory, magic and how it all
ties up. Thank again
Jules
