Where can I find documentation, i.e., an official source (either
government or media), for the George W. Bush quote in an address to
the nation following Sept. 11 (possibly either on Sept. 12, 2001 or
Sept. 20, 2001), as reported by Arianna Huffington on the Working
Assets Web site: ?Remember Sept. 12, 2001?. all the president called
on us to do was to go shopping and ?get down to Disney World in
Florida.?? Transcripts of his addresses on C-Span, NPR and other
sources do not contain any reference to this comment. Yet I distinctly
remember it. Is it possible the comment has been whitewashed from the
sites? (okay, that's two questions, i know). thanks.

Hi Indykjsharp!

On September 27, 2001, at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport,
President Bush said:

?Get on board. Do your business around the country. Fly and enjoy
America's great destination spots. Get down to Disney World in
Florida. Take your families and enjoy life, the way we want it to be
enjoyed.?

Remarks by the President to Airline Employees
Chicago O'Hare International Airport
Chicago, Illinois
September 27, 2001

Excerpt:

?When they struck, they wanted to create an atmosphere of fear. And
one of the great goals of this nation's war is to restore public
confidence in the airline industry. It's to tell the traveling
public: Get on board. Do your business around the country. Fly and
enjoy America's great destination spots. Get down to Disney World in
Florida. Take your families and enjoy life, the way we want it to be
enjoyed.?

Dear Indykjsharp!,

Thank you for your clarification. This is what I discovered.

There is a September 21, 2001 article in the Time Magazine describing
the Speech the President gave on September 20th.

And for God's sake keep shopping ? "I ask your continued participation
and confidence in the American economy" ? and keep praying:.

Note that And for God?s sake keep shopping is not in quotation marks.

Here is the transcript of this speech. There is no mention of shopping.

Another article:

President Bush urged listeners in Chicago to ?get down to Disney World
in Florida?--I can?t imagine why he chose Florida. One source notes:
?If some economists and business leaders are to be believed, the
terrorists will have won if Americans don?t go shopping.? We are
advised to show our patriotism, to help defeat terrorism, by going out
and spending money as we Americans have always done.

A Guardian Online News Article dated September 28, 2001 does not
mention anything about shopping.

?Yesterday, he asked the American public to get back on the planes and
travel: "Get down to Disney World in Florida, take your families and
enjoy life the way we want it to be enjoyed. We will put the federal
government in charge of passenger and bag screening and all safety
inspections," he added. "[We will introduce] visible security measures
so the travelling public will know that we are serious about airline
safety in America."

My friend and fellow researcher Pinkfreud-ga pointed out the following articles:

President Bush did say this, about shopping:

"I've been told that some fear to leave; some don't want to go
shopping for their families; some don't want to go about their
ordinary daily routines because, by wearing cover, they're afraid
they'll be intimidated. That should not and that will not stand in
America."

From a transcript of President Bush's comments at a Washington mosque:

----------------------------------------------------------------

Jeb Bush:

"We need to respond quickly so people regain confidence and consider
it their patriotic duty to go shopping, go to a restaurant, take a
cruise, travel with their family? Frankly, the terrorists win if
Americans don?t go back to normalcy."

Thank you for providing these results. Memory is strange... I thought
I heard "go shopping," not "participate in the economy." Must've been
the analyses I'm remembering. Or maybe the Orwellian memory hole now
exists. This is a great service! Thanks to Pinkfreud, too, and ulu for
the comments.

I do remember the quote from Giuliani from a September 12 news
conference. It was played with a similar message from Bush on TV.

http://www.nationalreview.com/murdock/murdock091401.shtml
"Show your confidence," Giuliani said. "Show you're not afraid. Go to
restaurants. Go shopping," he urged citizens.

Also in:

http://www.boston.com/news/packages/underattack/globe_stories/0914/In_crisis_Giuliani_s_image_transformed+.shtml
He has acknowledged that thousands probably had died, but added, ''Now
we've got to focus on how many we can save.'' He's urged people, ''Go
to restaurants, go shopping, do things, show that you're not afraid.''
He promised, ''We are going to rebuild; we're going to come out of
this stronger than we were before.''
