Question ID: 377844
I am a Web designer that is looking for information on how to
translate a Web site into a foreign language. I currently have the
site in English. Once I have had a translator translate the text for
me, how do I apply that text in HTML and what is needed on the Web
browser's side to view it?

As I understand it, if you want to view a site in a foreign language,
you need to set your browser to read a foreign language by telling it
which font to use. Where do you get such fonts?

I found some information to take into consideration when translating a site, at:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/manage/localization_audience/index.html
However, it does not say how to technically do it.

One of the languages I need to do a translation for is German.
However, there will be additional languages that are not known yet.

The servers are located in the U.S.

The two languages are German and French.

Thanks for asking!

It will likely be simpler that you think. You will not need to
translate any of your source code (HTML or other markup and
programming code such as Perl, Java, Javascript) since you are running
on US servers in English.

You will need to have only text translated. Replace English text
(including menu items) with the translated German (or French) text.
Use the Language Meta Tag to "inform" browsers of the correct
language.

Replacing the < and > with [ and ]

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Language" content="EN"> - English
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Language" content="DE"> - German
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Language" content="FR"> - French

Speakers/readers of these languages will very likely have the proper
fonts installed. They are part of a computer operating system.

My bad! The GoogleAnswer text box accepted my < and > without change.
Type or copy/paste META tags as shown. You do not need to replace with
[ or ]. Sorry.

The ISO-8859-1 Character Sets address all the languages you have
listed. The best resource I know for character usage with HTML is
Brian Wilson's Blooberry.com.

"ISO 8859 is a set of 10 different 256-character sets used to
represent a large set of the alphabetic languages used in the West.
... These sets were designed by the standards group ECMA (European
Computer Manufacturer's Association,) and are included in the Internet
charset register for use with MIME identification."

I have seen Babelfish, but I need to know how to create a new page in
a foreign language, not just translate an existing one.
