Question ID: 378389
I have a Sony LCD TV (model KLV 21SHG2) and DVD player (model DVP NS725P).
When we try to play a DVD, the TV displays two gray boxes in the upper left,
one saying "Video 3" and another saying "480i". In the past they have
gone away soon after I started playing a DVD. Now they just stay on
the screen. How can I make them go away?

Sony has a customer support site that might be able to answer
this, but it's full of javascript that breaks my browser:

Have you tried pressing the "Progressive" button on the front panel of
the DVD player a few times to cycle through the conversion modes?

Here's an online manual for the DVP NS725P that might help:

Bingo. mdkomegainc-ga's suggestion worked. The one complication
is that there are "display" buttons on both the tv and dvd remotes.
It's the dvd one you need to hit. It's right next to the power
button, and I must have hit it accidentally when turning the system
on. What an atrocious UI design!

Paul,

Since you've received an answer from a nonresearcher, you may want to
cancel this question now. One of the most interesting things about GA
is that occasionally you'll get a freebie!

I'm a manager at circuit city and this happens all the time,
bugbear-ga, if you would use your sony remote and press the display
button. That will do the trick, on the second hand make sure your dvd
player is a progressive scan player, use component video cables
(Monster Brand works best $90 bucks monster video 3 model) and enable
progressive can mode through the dvd options menu. There should be
five wires going from the back of the DVD player to the LCD TV, 3
video Green, Blue, Red, and 2 audio Red, White. This will get you all
set
