The longest documented non-stop swim by a human was 504 kilometers
(about 313 miles). The swimmer was Martin Strel, who holds numerous
marathon swimming records.

"The world record for the longest nonstop swim is held by Martin Strel
for swimming 504km nonstop in 2001 in the Danube River."

in Danube within 84 hours and 10 minutes. In 2002, he swam the entire
Mississippi River (3885 km) in 68 days. In 2003, he swam the

Regarding the matter of swimming from America to Europe, this amazing
feat was accomplished in 1998 by Benoit Lecomte:

"A Frenchman who set out to swim the Atlantic 71 days ago completed
his marathon 3,400-mile journey yesterday (9/25/1998). Benoit Lecomte,
31, who began his swim from the beaches of Cape Cod, Mass., came
ashore in the town on Quiberon, France, on the rugged Brittany
coast. The 5-foot-9-inch, 151-pound marketing executive swam six to
eight hours a day in two-hour blocks, stopping to eat and rest in a
boat that accompanied him."

It is much more difficult to swim in the open ocean than downstream in
a gently flowing river. The long swells and troths are very tiring.
And a storm is likely when the swimming period exceeds a day. Neil
