when companies move the earnings announcement date in, is it usually
because of good or bad news?

My guess is one is as likely as the other. A windfall just before the
early releace date makes the shortened period look even better due to
averaging over fewer days. Bad news being kept from the media might
cause an early releace date so the shareholders get the report before
the bad news escapes.  Neil
