Dear bautistuta-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. The good news is you may not have much a problem at all.

P0455 (note: this is a ?zero?, not an ?O?) is an On-Board diagnostic
(OBD-II) code common to many makes and models of cars including Saab.
Now you?re going to find this a bit hard to believe, but removing your
gas cap can probably solve your problem. Simply put it back on and
make sure it is good and tight. If your cap is in good shape the
problem will probably be fixed. If not, buy another gas cap, screw it
on and see if this resolves your problem. This very same happened to
me on my Dodge truck and it turned out that I had simply forgotten to
tighten my cap down that extra half turn the last time I got fuel.

You see, OBD Code P0455 commonly means you have a problem with the gas
cap, which in turn leads to a loss of the seal on your tank, or more
specifically, the tank neck. What happens is that a sensor detects a
pressure leak that is allowing gas fumes to escape into the
environment ? this useful, but often annoying, little device is known
as the ?evaporative emission system?. It?s one of those ?don?t pollute
the world? things that cars have on them nowadays.

If you replace the cap and this still doesn?t do the trick it may not
be a bad fuel cap. It could be something worse. These things might
include (in this particular order of horror):

A bad emission sensor ? this can often be fixed by buying and
installing a $30 part.

Damage or a hole in the gas tank or the filler neck ? if you are not
leaking gas or seeing gas in your parking spot when you move then this
is probably not the problem, but if it is, you may have to see a
mechanic.

A hose off between the filler neck and the canister, a hole in the
cannister, a hole in the hose between the cannister and the valve ?
this is not altogether a disaster but you?ll probably have to have a
mechanic fix it for you if you don?t know how.

Or a bad valve - take my word for it, pray it isn?t a bad valve. This
is by far the worst case scenario.

My guess is you just have a loose gas cap. I recommend you try
tightening your gas cap first. If this doesn?t work, buy a new cap. If
that doesn?t work, try running your car down to AutoZone or some
similar parts distributor where they have a courtesy diagnostic
monitor available to their customers. Often these places will gladly
send a member of their staff out to hook the thing up to your car at
no cost (or very little cost) to you and tell you precisely what your
problem is. This method can save you hundreds of bucks in mechanic?s
fees and odds are the guy who assists you can sell you a part to fix
the problem and perhaps even tell you how to install it.
