Hello Andrew

There are a number of factors to take into account when you register
your website with search engines and each have some relevance as to
whether your site will even be accepted by the search engine.

Because of these varying factors it is impossible to say a precise
time when your site will get listed, in general it takes between 2-8
weeks. Each time a link is submitted to a search engine it will be
added to the list of URL's the search engine needs to visit the next
time it updates its database. With certain search engines each site
is visited by a *real* person and this slows things down even more!

If after you have registered your site does not turn up at the top of
the list do not dispair, this is the fun part... you now have to start
advertising and promoting your website and getting more people to link
to it and ask for it at the different search engines. How you do this
is beyond the scope of this question and is an increasingly
specialised field.

To register your site is very easy you simply need to go to the search
engine you wish to register with and give them your website details.
It is simply a matter of filling in an online form. A few of the more
common website submission pages are here:

Google - ://www.google.com/addurl.html
Yahoo - http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/
DMOZ - http://dmoz.org/add.html

You can find others easily by visiting the search engine of your
choice and searching for "submit site", the proper page is usually
within the first few choices that are returned. There is often also a
link on the homepage of the search engine.

I would recommend submitting your site to the 3 search engines listed
above but the more you do the higher the chance your site will be
listed somewhere.

If you have any further questions on this subject please ask for
clarification and I will do my best to help.
