Dear deskworm-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. Davis Cheng appears to be a late 20th Century artist closely
affiliated with the United States but whose interests in landscape
oils on canvas reflects exclusively his native Hong Kong heritage. His
works appear to have been created during the 1950?s and 1960?s and
seem to have a relatively conservative if not moderate collector
value. Very little seems to be published about this artists in the
public domain though paid premium services may very well offer more
details.

As for other works, there are some details that I have been able to
round up without paying information fees. One such work was recently
held by BONHAMS & BUTTERFIELD:

BONHAMS & BUTTERFIELD
Lot 2850 - David Cheng Sunset Seascape Oil Painting
David Cheng
20th Century
Sunset Seascape
Signed, annotated and dated l/r: David Cheng Hong Kong 1961
Oil on canvas
16 x 12 inches ( 40.6 x 30.5 cm )
Estimate: $500 - $700
http://www.butterfields.com/areas/soma/7461f/detail/7461f-2850.htm

This estimate was apparently very optimistic because BONHAMS &
BUTTERFIELD actually sold the painting in September 2003 at auction
for only $294.

ARTPRICE.COM lists two other works by David Cheng but their history in
terms of value cannot be disclosed to those who have not subscribed to
the service (I am not a subscriber). I do know that both paintings
are landscape paintings (which appear to be this artists? chosen
subject) and were painted in 1957.

Wow, I never found any of that in my search, guess that's why your are
a researcher and I am not. Many thanx. The Painting I have is not a
landscape - it is a portrait of a chinese man reading a newspaper - as
I only paid £20 sterling for the painting I am quite please with the
price you quoted.

Thanx for all the info.
